Easy Steps to Modernize The Lights in Your Home o5 Recipes for Life

New Interior Lighting

Proper, well thought out lighting can do wonders to any home. Using lighting fixtures conscientiously and providing the right light accents to your interiors is one of the best ways to really show off how your beautiful your home is. It is also a great way of jazzing up a space that you haven?t redecorated in a while.

Modernizing the lights in your home is a cool interior designer?s trick and here?s how to do it.

Assess your interiors

Walk through your home and assess the whole area and from here make an initial plan of where you plan to put up new lights or areas that you plan to light up. You can draw a rough sketch of the space and identify where you want to put the lights. You should also indicate which areas will need different lighting effects ? dim lights, bright lights, yellow lights, among others. Finally, mark which areas will need constant illumination (places where the lights will rarely be turned off) and those that will only be lighted sometimes.

Take care of the basics

The first step to modernizing your lights doesn?t start with replacing light bulbs and fixtures but on the less glamorous part of the system ? the wiring and switch boards. Have an electrician asses your connections and wiring to ensure that they?re safe and can handle the load. Repair anything that needs to be repaired. This is very important since most household fires are caused by faulty wiring. You should get new switch boards if you want a total updated look for your interiors.

Choose light fixtures

Identify what kind of fixtures you want for particular areas of the house. Do you want light scones, a chandelier, or lamps? These and more are options that are open to you but everything will have to depend on how it will look with the rest of your d?cor and the kind of atmosphere you want to create with the lights. Be very conscious about this part of the process because it is quite easy to fall into kitschiness if you choose the wrong lighting fixture for a room. Ask friends for their opinion, read up on design guides, visit design websites or participate in online forums. These are cost-effective ways of improving your interior designing skills.

Spruce up the oldies

You don?t necessarily have to buy brand new lighting fixtures. You can the old ones that you have. One great idea is to undertake improvements on the fixtures you already own. For example, placing new fabric on lamp shades or polishing up your chandelier.

New E-Reader Display Aims at Video and Color

A new prototype e-reader display offers a small window into the future of these evolving devices. It's able to show new pages quickly enough to play videos, and its white background is brighter than a magazine's white pages ? an important component for making color e-readers, says the prototype's lead creator, engineer Jason Heikenfeld.

The prototype paves the way for e-readers that combine the best of readers and tablet computers, along with some abilities neither technology has. E-readers in the future could be very thin and light, show colors and videos, use little battery and be easy to read in sunlight, said Heikenfeld, who leads the Novel Devices Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati and conducts research for an e-reader display company, Gamma Dynamics. [SEE ALSO: Will Tablets Kill E-Readers?]

"If you want to make something like an iPad you can roll up and put in your pocket, this is the type of technology that can enable that type of breakthrough," Heikenfeld told TechNewsDaily.

The prototype Heikenfeld and his Cincinnati colleagues made would still need years of work before it shows up in a roll-able tablet. It usually takes years of continued research and funding from investors to turn a research advance into a consumer product, Heikenfeld said.

In a paper they published today (Oct. 30), Heikenfeld and his colleagues reported on their new display, which shows black-and-white images, is about 6 inches wide and has a resolution of 150 pixels per inch. The most basic Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook display just fewer than 170 pixels per inch.

Whiter and faster

The new e-paper is made with a white, plastic sheet that's 10 times thinner than a sheet of paper. The plastic is coated with aluminum, to help it reflect light better, and it's pricked with pores that are invisible to the naked eye.

To show text or images, the display pushes ink from behind the white sheet, through the pores and onto the front of the sheet. This type of movement is usually much faster than the technology that switches pixels between black and white in Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers on the market, Heikenfeld said. "You typically switch over a 100 times faster over similar distances," he said.

Heikenfeld's display is able to change what it shows about 67 times a second, which is fast enough for videos.

The aluminum-coated plastic sheet also better hides black ink behind it than current e-reader displays. That's the key to its brighter white background. Heikenfeld compared basic e-reader displays to thinly painted white walls that still show some of a darker paint job underneath. "If you have a black wall in your house and you want to paint it white, you know one coat won't do it," he said.

That bright white not only makes for a display that looks more like glossy magazine pages, it could help researchers create e-readers that show color. Of course, the liquid crystal displays on tablets already show color, but they do so by shining colored lights out of the screen. E-readers, on the other hand, create colors by reflecting incoming light. They use much less power, are easier to read in sunlight and are thinner than LCDs.

Adding color inks to e-readers darkens their displays, Heikenfeld explained. By making a whiter display to start with, the Novel Devices Lab's technology builds in a cushion for the darkening effects of color inks, he said.

"Now you're starting to capture a lot of the advantages you have in an iPad screen, but you can see in it in sunlight," Heikenfeld said.

Grayscale and color next

The Novel Devices Lab is now trying to show grayscale images using their new display tech, Heikenfeld said. Gamma Dynamics is working on displaying color.

Another important next step will be to make larger versions of the display. "Our goal is to make this on a roll. We're talking about a roll 8 to 12 inches wide," Heikenfeld said.

He and his colleagues published their work in the journal Nature Communications.

How to try out a Nexus 4 (and GSM) with no commitment

Prepaid SIM Cards

The Nexus 4 has a whole lot of features to be excited about -- that is, unless you're on Verizon or Sprint here in the states. For reasons you can probably figure out on your own, Google has decided to only launch an unlocked GSM model of the Nexus 4, and offer it around the world. This means no LTE -- fear not, it has DC-HSPA+ 42mbps -- but it also keeps the price insanely low. At $299 (8GB) and $349 (16GB) without a contract, it's an extremely tempting proposition.

But as we noted earlier, what if you're on a CDMA carrier? Well there are actually some compelling options if you'd like to "test drive" a Nexus 4 -- and GSM -- before you commit to making it your primary device.

Top East Coast refiner restarting after Hurricane Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The biggest U.S. East Coast refinery in Philadelphia began restoring production after Hurricane Sandy on Tuesday and a smaller nearby plant operated without trouble as energy firms began assessing the storm's damage.

While some facilities were still plagued by power outages, the early reports suggested the region's fuel supplies could bounce back quickly after being almost completely halted ahead of Sandy, which came ashore on Monday evening with winds of up to 90 mph (144 kmph) and an almost 14-foot (4.2-metre) storm surge, causing widespread power outages.

Benchmark New York gasoline futures prices, which rallied more than 6 percent ahead of the storm as traders feared a disruption in supplies, dropped more than 2 percent or six cents on Tuesday as the focus shifted to the likely cut in fuel consumption due to grounded flights and empty roads. U.S. crude oil futures rose slightly, reversing Monday's dip.

Operations in the Philadelphia area appeared set to resume quickly. Philadelphia Energy Solutions' 330,000-barrel-per-day refinery, the biggest in the region, escaped damage and was restoring operations, the company said, confirming an earlier Reuters report. Industry intelligence group Genscape said its cameras detected the restart of key crude and vacuum distillation units in the Point Breeze section of the plant.

Delta Air Lines subsidiary Monroe Energy's 185,000 bpd Trainer, Pennsylvania, plant continued operating through the storm, and was expected to reach full rates next week after a major maintenance overhaul, a source said.

The situation will be a tricky for a few days. Phillips 66 reported a power outage at its 238,000-bpd Bayway, New Jersey, plant late on Monday, after it had been shut down as a precaution. Experts say that could slow the recovery at the plant, which was also seen as the most vulnerable to flooding.

"Bayway is probably the most exposed as it sits right out by the water and it's certainly in the path of the storm," said Matthew Partridge, downstream analyst at Wood Mackenzie in Houston. He said plants should be up "within a few days" if they escape damage, although it was too early to give an assessment.

As the storm moved north, a power outage shut Imperial Oil's 121,000 bpd Sarnia, Ontario refinery, but the company said it expected to restart units later in the day.

Colonial Pipeline, a conduit that supplies as much as 15 percent of the East Coast's 5.2 million bpd of gasoline, diesel and fuel demand from Gulf Coast refiners, said it had lost power at is Linden, New Jersey facility in New York Harbor, potentially thwarting efforts to resume pumping.

Three of the area's six key refineries shut down operations in advance of Sandy's landfall, while two more reduced operating rates, curtailing at least two-thirds of the region's capacity.

Major ports that supply the area with some 1 million bpd of imported fuel were starting to reopen. The Port of Boston opened without restrictions and was expected to unload a gasoline cargo later on Tuesday, an official said.

DEMAND DESTRUCTION

John Auers, senior vice president and refining specialist at Turner, Mason & Co. in Dallas, said East Coast plants, even those near the water, are better protected from potential flood damage than those that suffered weeks-long outages on the Gulf Coast following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita seven years ago.

But even well-prepared plants can face problems. Following Hurricane Isaac in August, Phillips 66 was forced to clear more than two feet of floodwater from its Alliance, Louisiana refinery, delaying its restart.

Most refineries have some on-site generation equipment that could help restore operations if there are power outages.

The largest risk may simply lie in restarting vast, intense equipment after a brief shutdown.

"You're talking about heating up oil to fairly high temperatures, putting it through processing units at high pressure," said Auers. "Anytime you interrupt that steady-state there is always the potential for issues."

The precautionary refinery closures were more widespread than during Hurricane Irene in August 2011, when only the Bayway plant shut completely.

PBF Energy is expected to ramp up its Delaware City refinery after minimal run-cuts later on Tuesday, a source said. Genscape said it had detected elevated levels of flaring at the Delaware City facility, similar to past events associated with minor operational issues.

PBF also curbed rates at its 180,000-bpd Paulsboro plant in southern New Jersey.

There was no word on Hess Corp's 70,000-bpd Port Reading, New Jersey refinery.

SUPPLIES STRETCHED, BUT DEMAND WEAK

Oil traders were already beginning to reconsider the run-up in fuel prices ahead of the storm. One trader offering to sell physical cargoes in the New York harbor market found no buyers on Monday.

That's despite the fact that fuel stockpiles, heating oil in particular, are unusually low for this time of year.

While awaiting news on fuel supplies, oil traders began totting up the impact on demand.

Airlines had canceled more than 13,700 flights for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, including more than 7,600 for Monday alone, flight-tracking service FlightAware said. Jet fuel consumption of an estimated 170,000 bpd at the three major New York area airports ground to a halt.

Road travel was also limited by highway closures, with major bridges and tunnels shut down. Marine traffic at some of the nation's busiest ports was halted.

"Demand is going to be a lot lower this week, as not many people are going to be out there driving," said Partridge. "If this number of refineries went offline during the summer driving season gasoline prices would go through the roof."

Even if the refineries escape unscathed, damage to the vast network of oil terminals, pipelines and truck racks would complicate supply logistics.

NuStar Energy and Magellan Midstream Partners, two of the biggest players in the nation's pipeline and storage terminal business, also shut terminals along the East Coast.

"As a result, the distribution infrastructure, including pipelines and refined product terminals are extremely important and could hamper recovery efforts if significant amounts of this infrastructure is damaged," said Roger Ihne, principal in the oil and gas practice at consultancy Deloitte.

Honeybees harbor antibiotic-resistance genes

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Bacteria in the guts of honeybees are highly resistant to the antibiotic tetracycline, probably as a result of decades of preventive antibiotic use in domesticated hives. Researchers from Yale University identified eight different tetracycline resistance genes among U.S. honeybees that were exposed to the antibiotic, but the genes were largely absent in bees from countries where such antibiotic use is banned. The study appears on October 30 in mBio?, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

"It [resistance] seems to be everywhere in the U.S.," says Nancy Moran of Yale University, a senior author on the study. "There's a pattern here, where the U.S. has these genes and the others don't."

Honeybees the world over are susceptible to the bacterial disease called "foulbrood", which can wipe out a hive faster than beekeepers can react to the infection. In the U.S., beekeepers have kept the disease at bay with regular preventive applications of the antibiotic oxytetracycline, a compound that closely resembles tetracycline, which is commonly used in humans. Oxytetracycline has been in use among beekeepers since the 1950s, and many genes that confer resistance to oxytetracycline also confer resistance to tetracycline.

Using sensitive molecular techniques, Moran and her colleagues screened honeybees from several locations in the United States and from Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand as well as several wild bumblebees from the Czech Republic, for the presence and abundance of tetracycline resistance genes. They found that U.S. honeybees have greater numbers and a more diverse set of tetracycline resistance genes than honeybees from the other countries.

Moran says it is reasonable to expect to see widespread resistance among bees, considering the decades-long use of oxytetracycline in honeybee hives. "It seems likely this reflects a history of using oxytetracycline since the 1950s. It's not terribly surprising. It parallels findings in other domestic animals, like chickens and pigs," says Moran.

Moran notes that beekeepers have long used oxytetracycline to control the bacterium that causes foulbrood, but the pathogen eventually acquired resistance to tetracycline itself. Of the foulbrood pathogens Melissococcus pluton and Paenibacillus larvae, Moran says, "They carry tetL, which is one of the eight resistance genes we found. It's possible that the gene was transferred either from the gut bacteria to the pathogen or from the pathogen to the gut bacteria."

Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand do not allow beekeepers to use oxytetracycline in hives, so it is perhaps predictable that honeybees and wild bumblebees from these countries harbored only two or three different resistance genes and only in very low copy numbers, suggesting that the bacteria did not require the genes very frequently.

The authors of the study point out that by encouraging resistance and altering the bacteria that live in honeybee guts, decades of antibiotic applications may have actually been detrimental to honeybee wellbeing. Studies have suggested that the bacterial residents of the honeybee gut play beneficial roles in neutralizing toxins in the bees' diet, nutrition, and in defending the bee against pathogens. By disrupting the honeybee microbiota and reducing its diversity, long-term antibiotic use could weaken honeybee resistance to other diseases. Hence, the treatment that was meant to prevent disease and strengthen the hive may actually weaken its ability to fight off other pathogens.

Moran says while the study is interesting from the perspective of honeybee health and could have implications for how honeybee diseases are managed, the presence of resistance genes in the honeybee gut doesn't pose a direct risk to humans. These gut bacteria, says Moran, "don't actually live in the honey, they live in the bee. We've never actually detected them in the honey. When people are eating honey, they're not eating these bacteria."

What Do Kids Do At Home Based Preschool? - Toddlers - Families ...

by Sara Berthiaume | More from this Blogger

One thing that is often on the mind of parents of toddlers is preschool. After all, once a toddler is no longer a toddler, he becomes part of the "preschoolers" age group whether or not he actually attends preschool. I am not sure why that is, and this morning when I was talking with my husband about it he agreed that it seems a bit odd to define an entire age group by something that not every child does.

Perhaps the reason that it seems odd to us is that our soon - to - be preschooler is unlikely to be attending preschool. While there are a couple of nice preschool options in our geographic area, we have decided that it is not necessary that Dylan attend preschool. Since I am at home full time right now anyways and we are interested in exploring how homeschooling works, it makes sense for us to do preschool at home.

We have discussed preschool with Dylan, and we have approached the topic from many different angles, always being careful not to suggest that either attending preschool or not attending preschool is a "better" preference for him to express. He consistently articulates a preference for not attending preschool, stating enthusiastically that he wants Mommy to teach him at "we own home". Since Dylan's third birthday is just around the corner, I decided to look at the basic elements of home preschooling so that I can keep them in mind as I begin to plan how we will do it.

Children in preschool spend their days doing things like reading, singing, doing arts and crafts, and playing with other children their age. They also go on group outings in their communities. We like these things, and some of them have already become a fairly regular part of our daily and weekly activities.

For example, on Wednesdays our local library has story time for children ages two to five. We have attended a few times and could make it a regular part of our schedule. Currently, we don't spend much time singing or doing arts and crafts, but that can easily be changed. Dylan has a couple of friends, and we can schedule play dates more regularly. I also plan to look around town and see whether there are other mothers who are planning to do preschool at home so that we might get to know each other and set up a weekly gathering for the kids. Outings happen regularly, and we very much enjoy going places together. Whether we are headed out to the grocery store or to bring the trash to the landfill, Dylan loves going places with me. Even better, he pays close attention to what he sees and he asks plenty of questions.

It seems as though the ingredients for a successful home preschool experience are well within our reach. Now, I just have to dust off my vocal chords and stock up on craft ideas and supplies.

Watching the cogwheels of the biological clock in living cells

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Our master circadian clock resides in a small group of about 10'000 neurons in the brain, called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. However, similar clocks are ticking in nearly all cells of the body, as demonstrated by the group of Ueli Schibler, professor at the Department of Molecular Biology of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The molecular mechanisms of circadian clocks can thus be studied outside of the animals, in cultured cells.

A system to study gene regulation live in single cells

"Given the important role of the DBP protein in the regulation of detoxifying enzymes, we were interested in studying the molecular mechanisms underlying the rhythmic transcription of the DBP gene," points out the biologist, who is member of the NCCR Frontiers in Genetics. To do so, his team devised an elegant method to watch directly under the microscope how the clock's molecular "cogwheels" govern the activity rhythms of this gene in individual living cells. To this end, the scientists engineered a cell line with a piece of a chromosome exclusively composed of repeated DBP gene copies. They showed that the daily transcription of DBP is due to the rhythmic association of an essential clock component, the transcription factor BMAL1. "This is the first time a transcription factor binding to a circadian gene could be visualized in real time in single cells" explains Markus Stratmann, first author of the article.

The clock transcription factor must be sacrificed

To their surprise, the scientists found that the clock protein BMAL1 is destroyed while stimulating the expression of the DBP gene. By applying a variety of sophisticated imaging and biochemical techniques, they showed that the BMAL1 molecules bound to the DBP gene are degraded by an intracellular protein destruction machine, termed the proteasome.

Curiously, the chopping of the triggering protein BMAL1 is absolutely required for the efficient activation of the DBP gene. In other words, BMAL1 must die while embracing that gene in order to do its job. "In a sense, these transcription factors have the same cruel fate as males of the carnivorous insect Mantis. Sadly, Mantis females decapitate and then start eating their partners before the act of love is even completed" says Markus Stratmann.

At the moment, the biologists can only speculate about the broader impact of their findings. "We do not yet understand why the destruction of the BMAL1 protein is mandatory for the optimal functioning of the DBP gene" remarks Ueli Schibler. In fact, BMAL1 molecules regulate the daily activity of many other genes without getting killed while doing their work. The researchers noticed, however, that genes whose activity is not associated with the destruction of BMAL1 are expressed many hours later than the DBP gene. Their work thus offers a plausible explanation to the enigma of how one and the same transcription factor, BMAL1, can impose dramatically different daily cycles of gene expression.

Suicide attack kills 41 at Afghan mosque

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber detonated explosives outside a mosque packed with senior regional officials in northern Afghanistan on a major Muslim holiday Friday, killing 41 people. The officials escaped unhurt, and many of the dead were soldiers and police.

The attack was the latest in a series of deadly strikes in recent weeks against Afghan army, police and government officials. The choice of targets suggests that the insurgents are increasingly turning against Afghan authorities and security forces now that NATO is drawing down toward a final withdrawal of foreign combat troops in 2014.

Deaths of Afghan police and soldiers are higher this year than last year, according army spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zaher Azimi. Although the Taliban have claimed responsibility for a parallel sharp increase in attacks by Afghan servicemen on their foreign colleagues, the overall number of coalition deaths has been noticeably lower than last year.

Health Minister Soraya Dalil said 41 people were killed and 56 wounded in Friday's attack.

At least 14 civilians were among the dead, just two days after Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar urged his fighters to "pay full attention to the prevention of civilian casualties" because he said the enemy was trying to blame them on the insurgents. Taliban attacks account for the vast majority of civilian casualties in the war, according to the U.N.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the suicide bombing outside the mosque. The attack took place in the town of Maymana, capital of northern Faryab province, where the Taliban and allied militant groups have been active far from their traditional strongholds in southern and eastern Afghanistan.

The bomber struck after top provincial officials, including the governor and the police chief, had assembled inside the mosque to celebrate the Eid al-Adha holiday. The blast went off in the middle of a large crowd that included police and soldiers waiting for the dignitaries to remerge.

"The targets of the bomber were all the officials inside the mosque," Deputy Governor Abdul Satar Barez said. Nobody inside the mosque was reported hurt. The carnage was all outside.

"There was blood and dead bodies everywhere," said Khaled, a doctor who was in the mosque at the time of the blast and who, like many Afghans, uses only one name. "It was a massacre," said Khaled, who like many Afghans uses only one name.

Video from the scene showed the motionless bodies of several soldiers and policemen lying next to their vehicles parked on a tree-lined avenue of the city, located about 500 kilometers (300 miles) northwest of the capital, Kabul. On the sidewalk, civilians were lying along the mosque's outer wall, some writhing and moaning in pain.

Friday's bombing took place at roughly the same time as Afghan President Hamid Karzai was taping his Eid al-Adha televised message to the nation. In the address, Karzai urged Taliban insurgents "to stop killing other Afghans" and "stop the destruction of our mosques, hospitals and schools."

Later, Karzai issued a statement saying those who carried out Friday's attack were "enemies of Islam and humanity."

The NATO-led coalition's commander, U.S. Gen. John R. Allen, also condemned the attack.

"This violence undertaken at a place of worship, and during Eid, once again shows the insurgency's callous hypocrisy and disregard for religion and faith," Allen said in a statement.

Insurgents have staged numerous suicide bombings at mosques during the 11-year war.

The deadliest such attack took place last December in Kabul, with 56 Shiite Muslim worshippers killed and 160 wounded. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Pakistan-based Sunni Muslim group, claimed responsibility.

On Sept. 4, 25 civilians were killed and more than 35 wounded in an attack on a mosque in Nangarhar province. That attack targeted a district chief as he and a group of people were heading from the mosque to a cemetery. The district chief survived but his son did not.

The attacks on Afghan officials indicate that the Taliban are trying to exploit NATO plans to withdraw its roughly 100,000 troops from the country by the end of 2014, leaving security in the hands of the 352,000-strong Afghan army and police. There are serious questions about the ability of the newly trained security forces to combat the insurgency, which even the U.S.-led coalition has not been able to stamp out.

At the same time, the spate of so-called insider attacks has undermined trust between international troops and Afghan army and police, further weakened public support for the war in NATO countries and increased calls for earlier withdrawals.

On Friday, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the deaths of two American service members in southern Uruzgan province the day before.

In an emailed statement, Taliban spokesman Yusuf Ahmadi said a member of the Afghan security forces shot the two men and then escaped to join the insurgents.

Maj. Lori Hodge, spokeswoman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said Thursday that authorities were trying to determine whether the latest attacker was a member of the Afghan security forces or an insurgent who donned a government uniform.

It was the second suspected insider attack in two days. On Wednesday, two British service members and an Afghan policeman were gunned down in Helmand province.

Before Thursday's assault, 53 foreigners attached to the U.S.-led coalition had been killed in attacks by Afghan soldiers or police this year.

Up to 40 percent may vote early in U.S. election; Obama ahead

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Early voters could account for up to 40 percent of all ballots cast in the 2012 U.S. presidential election, and polls of people who already voted show President Barack Obama with a comfortable lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Both candidates have been urging supporters not just to vote but to do it early as Republicans and Democrats campaign vigorously - particularly in key battleground states - to lock up as many votes as possible before Election Day on November 6.

Polls of people who say they already have voted show Obama with a lead in many of the states. The Obama campaign, which benefited from early voting in 2008, has focused heavily on urging supporters to vote early in this election as well.

Obama leads Romney 54 percent to 39 percent among voters who already have cast ballots, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling data compiled in recent weeks. The sample size of early voters is 960 people with a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

About 18 percent of registered voters already have cast ballots, the Reuters/Ipsos polling data showed. Around a quarter of minority voters - who tend to support Obama - and almost a fifth of white voters have cast ballots, the data showed.

Allison Gilmore voted during her lunch break at a community center in Arlington, Virginia. Like many who vote early, Gilmore was not sure she could make it on Election Day.

"I don't know how busy I'll be at work, (with) childcare - and I want to make sure I get my vote in," said Gilmore, 35, who declined to say for whom she voted.

Another voter, Myrna Levey of Cleveland, Ohio, said she voted early for Obama, by mail through an absentee ballot.

"It's more convenient," said Levey, 74. "They moved our voting place several blocks away and it is no longer in walking distance."

RECORD NUMBERS

Early voting, which began in some states in September, is now underway in nearly all 50 states, either by mail-in or in-person voting. Political scientists who specialize in early voting predict that a record 35 to 40 percent of all U.S. voters will cast their ballots before the November 6 election.

"In some of the battleground states, rates are even above that," said Michael McDonald, a political science professor at George Mason University in Virginia who runs the U.S. Elections Project and tracks all early votes (U.S. Elections Project: http://elections.gmu.edu/early_vote_2012.html).

"There's a lot of activity out there with both the Romney and the Obama campaigns organizing and mobilizing their supporters to vote early," McDonald said.

According to McDonald's data, states such as Iowa and Ohio - both of which are considered pivotal in the election - show a faster pace of early voting than in 2008.

A main reason for the increase in numbers of people voting early is that Republicans, who were caught flat-footed by Obama's strong performance in early voting in 2008, have put more emphasis on it this time around, experts said.

The parties have been sending out dueling memos in the past few days with each side claiming to have the upper hand in early voting.

As a sign of the importance the Democrats place on early voting, Obama became the first sitting president to vote early when he cast his ballot in Chicago on Thursday.

The two parties spent a lot of time in court this year battling over early voting laws in states such as Florida and Ohio as Democrats accused Republicans of trying to limit early voting to suppress the turnout of working-class and minority voters.

In the end, Ohio was ordered by the courts to allow early voting to all until the eve of the election. And while Florida cut the number of days of early voting, it agreed to extend the number of hours on each day to satisfy critics.

Chiefs to start Quinn over Cassel at quarterback

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Brady Quinn will take over as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback and Matt Cassel will serve as the backup beginning with Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders.

Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel made the announcement before Monday's practice, shortly after meeting with the team that is off to a miserable 1-5 start. Both quarterbacks were informed of the change earlier in the day.

"I think that will get everyone's attention," Crennel said, "and hopefully that impacts the team, because the quarterback position is the one that has the spotlight on him."

Quinn started for the first time since 2009 in the Chiefs' loss at Tampa Bay two weeks ago because Cassel was still feeling the effects of a concussion sustained the previous week against Baltimore. Kansas City had last week off.

Quinn didn't perform well against the Buccaneers, going 22 of 38 for 180 yards with two interceptions with a touchdown in a 38-10 loss. But the former first-round draft pick did show the kind of poise and arm strength that Cassel has been lacking all season.

"He was a little rusty," Crennel acknowledged, "but with playing time, practice time, I expect him to be better and lead this team."

Crennel said after Cassel was hurt that he didn't anticipate making a long-term change at the position. But the coach said extra evaluation time over the bye week gave him a better perspective on what could get the team going.

"When you think about changing the dynamic, what position can change the dynamic the most?" Crennel said. "That's the quarterback position. So I decided that was the move I wanted to make, to try to change this team and impact this team."

Cassel, who missed the end of last season with a hand injury, hasn't been nearly as good as he was two years ago, when he led the Chiefs to the AFC West title and was voted to the Pro Bowl.

He was completing just 58.5 percent of his passes for 230 yards per game, and had thrown nine interceptions against five touchdown passes. He'd also lost five fumbles, and his 14 turnovers in total are more than all but five teams in the league.

"I'm not saying Matt Cassel is the reason we are where we are," Crennel said. "We need to coach better and we need to play better, and if we do those things, we can be better, but my biggest deal was my gut was telling me we need to impact that team by changing that dynamic."

Crennel said he doesn't want Quinn to be looking over his shoulder, so "there will be no quick hook or anything like that." After playing the Raiders on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City hits the road for games against San Diego and Pittsburgh.

"I don't think the team has lost confidence in Matt," Crennel said. "It's just one of those things where the circumstances we're in, you have to decide what you want to do to change it, and I decided to change the quarterback."

The acquisition of Cassel in a trade with New England was the first major move that Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli made after taking the job in Kansas City. His second major move was to sign Cassel to a $63 million, six-year deal that still has two years remaining on it.

Quinn is playing on a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.

"There are a lot of issues, and that position is one of them," Pioli told The Associated Press during an interview last week.

Crennel said he wasn't considering long-term ramifications when making his decision, such as whether the franchise will trade for another quarterback or select one early in the draft.

Crennel's focus was giving the Chiefs a much-needed boost immediately.

"The only future I thought about was this coming Sunday," he said.

Filner Continues To Lead In San Diego Mayor's Race

Monday, October 15, 2012

The SurveyUSA poll of likely voters from our media partner 10News shows Democratic Congressman Bob Filner leading over Republican City Councilman Carl DeMaio in the San Diego mayor's race 47 percent to 40 percent with 13 percent of likely voters reporting they?re still undecided.

The gap between the two candidates has narrowed some since an identical SurveyUSA poll three weeks ago. Filner is down three points and DeMaio is up two. DeMaio has also recaptured his lead among male voters, though Filner continues to lead in a majority of demographic categories.

Still, DeMaio is ahead in an important group. Of the 24 percent of voters who said they?ve already cast their ballots by mail, 47 percent said they supported DeMaio, while 42 percent went for Filner. SurveyUSA said those who cast ballots early are seen as the most committed voters.

10News expects to release at least one more poll before Election Day on November 6th.

Motivating Your Team to Peak Performance: 6 Tips for Successful ...

Written By Brian Tracy | Business Success | October 16th, 2012 | 1 Comment ?

team building -peak performanceOver the years, exhaustive research has been done on top teams and peak performance. There seem to be given characteristics or qualities of peak performance teams that you can incorporate into your strategy to reach your business goals.

The words ?team work? and ?team building? are two of the most popular phrases in modern management today.? They are often announced as though they are great discoveries that have only become evident as a result of the speed of change in the last decade of the 20th century.

Get Your Free Report: Taking Action

Virtually every progressive company in the world today is committed to building and maintaining high-quality teams.? Because of the flattening of corporate hierarchies, opportunities for rapid promotion have diminished dramatically and been replaced by the rewards and satisfactions possible from working together in harmony with other people toward the achievement of important goals and objectives.

Team Building through Shared Goals

In the beginning phase of team building, you must ensure that everyone is clear about what the team is expected to accomplish. The goals of the team are shared and discussed by everyone. Each team member gives his or her ideas and input into how the goals and objectives can be best achieved. Each person feels like a part of a larger organization and strives to reach peak performance.

Top Teams Share Values and Principles

In peak performance teams, there is regular discussion about the values, principles, and behaviors that guide the decisions of the team. The leader encourages values such as honesty, openness, punctuality, responsibility for completing assignments, quality work, and so on. Everyone discusses and agrees on what they are.

Peak Performance Teams Share Plans of Action

In this phase of team building, you go around the table and have each member of the team explain exactly what part of the work he or she is going to accept responsibility for completing. At the end of this discussion, each member knows what every other member is going to be doing and how his or her own work fits in with the work of the team.

Always Lead the Action

There must always be a clear boss or leader in any organization. Democracy is a fine concept, but it goes only so far in business. Someone must be in command and take charge. And that someone is probably you. On a good team, everyone knows who is in charge. The leader sets an example for the others. The leader becomes the role model and can lead the team to peak performance.

Continuous Review and Evaluation

In this final phase of team building, the team regularly evaluates its progress from two perspectives. First, is the team getting the results that are expected by its customers or other in the company? In dealing with customers, does the team set up mechanisms to continually ask customers, ?how are we doing??

Bringing the Team Together

One of the most important things you do in building a peak performance organization is to hold regular staff meetings. Bring your people together weekly, at a fixed time, to talk, discuss, catch up on progress, learn how the company is doing, and generally share ideas, opinions, and insights.

Pokemon White Version 2

Traditionally, Pokemon games go through a specific sequel convention. Each "generation" has two games, often of contrasting colors or materials (Pokemon Red/Blue, Pokemon Gold/Silver, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire), followed shortly after by a half-sequel that presents a new color or material (Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Crystal, Pokemon Emerald). These half-sequels have the same general structure of the main games, but with slightly different Pokemon and events. Nintendo and Game Freak have bucked the trend with Pokemon Black and White, the sixth generation of Pokemon games. Instead of a bland-sounding Pokemon Grey, Nintendo has put out Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2 for the Nintendo DS and 3DS?, and instead of providing a retread of the original games they serve as a direct sequel with a new story and sequence of events. At $39.99 each, Pokemon Black and White Version 2 each offer (in very similar ways; there's no reason to buy both unless you're a completionist) an extensive Pokemon experience that manages to feel fresh compared to the original sixth generation games.

Back to Unova
Pokemon Black and White Version 2 both take place two years after the events of Pokemon Black and White, putting you in the shoes of a new Pokemon trainer from a small town in the Unova region, just outside the original playable area of the games. It's the same deal as every other main Pokemon game, where you start with one of three elemental starter Pokemon, you have to collect Pokemon and beat the eight gym leaders of the region, beat the Elite Four at the Pokemon Championships, and thwart Team (Something) as they try to do something evil. None of that has changed.

The big change is in the region itself. Not only do you start in a new town, but nearly every location has been altered over the last two years. There are new towns, new gyms, and new ways to get between towns like underwater tunnels. You go through a completely new route and new sequence of gyms, with several new gym leaders (including characters from Pokemon Black and White), and while you do this you have to fight the remnants of Team Plasma, the villains from the previous games. Team Plasma has abandoned its ideals after its leader, N, was persuaded by the last games' hero to give up his mission to free all Pokemon, and now the old members that didn't follow N just want to take over the Unova region.

As you explore Unova again, you meet people who were affected by the previous games' hero and N's actions. If you played Pokemon Black and White and link your game's save file through the Pokemon Global Network (a process that requires visiting the Pokemon Web page and registering both games, then recording your save file to the network), you get more content in the form of flashbacks and special Pokemon involved with N and the hero, and the different characters all remember the name you put in from the previous game. It's a nice touch, even if the process is convoluted.

Lots To Do
There are a few extra activities to try along with the ones from Black and White. You can now start in greenscreened movies at a studio, giving you more thoughtful, puzzle-like battled with certain Pokemon that emphasize meeting certain requirements instead of just winning. You can start your own shopping area on Join Avenue, where you can recruit NPCs to run and visit shops and expand by linking with other players through SpotPass. You can also collect medals by performing certain tasks, giving the game a form of achievements or trophies. The Battle Subway returns and is joined by the Pokemon World Tournament. The Battle Subway lets you fight random trainers with an equalized level of Pokemon for Battle Points to get new training machines, and the Pokemon World Tournament lets you fight gym leaders (bosses) from previous Pokemon games.

There are still plenty of online features, including battling and trading Pokemon across the Internet and local wireless connections. The Entralink feature from Black and White returns, letting players walk around parts of Unova with their friends and unlock rare Pokemon and new areas. The competitive Pokemon field is big, and if you like micromanaging and researching stats, you'll get plenty of use out of the online modes.

Pokemon Black and White Version 2 are more of the same as Pokemon games, but they offer enough twists and changes to feel like a genuine sequel of Pokemon Black and White and not just an upgraded remake like the other Pokemon half-sequels. Even if you played through the last Pokemon game, Pokemon Black and White Version 2 can feel fresh and offer plenty of content.

BEIJING (AP) ? Eager to expand in the United States, China's biggest technology companies face an America anxious about threats to jobs and national security.

The latest blow: A U.S. report that says telecom equipment makers Huawei Technologies Inc. and ZTE Corp. are potential security threats that Americans should avoid doing business with.

The report, coming amid an American presidential race in which trade tensions with Beijing are a prominent issue, highlights conflicting U.S. sentiments toward China, an important trading partner but a potential strategic rival. U.S. companies see China as both a crucial growth market and a source of competition and industrial spying.

"A lot of people in America are worried about a diminishing role in the world and China being the prime beneficiary and potentially one day moving into that top slot," said Charles Maynard, senior managing director of Business Development Asia, which advises companies on acquisitions.

Legislators are "playing to a lot of voters at home who are very concerned about that issue," he said.

The report Monday by the House Intelligence Committee said U.S. companies should avoid doing business with Huawei and ZTE and recommended regulators block them from buying U.S. companies. It said government computer systems should not include components from them because they might pose an espionage risk.

China's government rejected the report as false and an effort to block Chinese companies from the U.S. market.

"The Chinese side expresses its serious concerns and strong opposition," Commerce Ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said in a statement Tuesday. He called on the United States to "abandon the practice of discrimination against Chinese companies."

The report has no official force but could discourage American telephone carriers from dealing with Huawei and ZTE, especially when it comes to the big-ticket network technology the Chinese companies are eager to sell.

Huawei and ZTE, both based in Shenzhen in southern China, near Hong Kong, rejected the accusation and complained the committee failed to provide evidence to back it up.

The report "employs many rumors and speculations to prove non-existent accusations," said a Huawei spokesman, Scott Sykes, in an e-mail.

"We have to suspect that the only purpose of such a report is to impede competition and obstruct Chinese ICT companies from entering the US market," Sykes said.

ZTE said the investigation should be extended to Western suppliers because their equipment is manufactured in or uses components from China.

The United States and other governments welcome the small but growing flow of Chinese investment. Most deals abroad go through with little trouble. But companies from China's government-dominated economy carry unusual political baggage that has stymied transactions in sensitive areas such as energy and telecommunications.

Last year, Huawei was forced to rescind its purchase of a small California computer company, 3Leaf Systems, after a U.S. government security panel rejected the deal.

Huawei, founded in 1987 by a former Chinese military engineer, has grown into the world's biggest supplier of network gear, competing with Nokia Siemens Networks and Sweden's Ericsson AB.

"They are the first Chinese company to present a viable, sustainable competitive threat to what has long been perceived as America's core competitive advantage, which is innovation and high technology," said David Wolf, a technology marketing consultant in Beijing. "No matter what firm stepped into that, it would be caught in the barbed wire."

Huawei, with 140,000 employees, says it made two-thirds of its 204 billion yuan ($32 billion) in sales last year outside China. The smaller state-owned ZTE says it made just over half its revenues abroad. Huawei says it is employee-owned and has denied suggestions it is controlled by the ruling Communist Party or is a front for the military.

Both companies are well-established suppliers to other developing countries and want to expand in lucrative U.S. and European markets. Huawei sells smartphones in the United States under its own brand.

Other governments also have questioned Huawei's suitability. Australia's government disclosed in March that Huawei was banned from bidding to help build a nationwide high-speed Internet network due to concern about cyber-attacks traced to China.

Huawei has been hurt by its reluctance to release details of who controls the company. Such secretiveness is common among major Chinese companies but unusual in Western markets. In contrast to American CEOs who are expected to act as their companies' public face, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei never talks to reporters and rarely appears in public.

Huawei has tried to ease U.S. concerns by hiring American executives and spokespeople. It has taken reporters on tours of its sprawling, leafy campus in Shenzhen. In the congressional investigation, it handed over information about members of its board of directors and names of employee shareholders.

In Britain, Huawei has set up a testing center where government technicians can examine its equipment.

"They are going to have to move more quickly," said Wolf. "They need to put their most senior executives in front of the American public."

In other industries, Chinese executives are reluctant to pursue deals in the United States if they think they might be subjected to the unfamiliar and uncomfortable scrutiny of a government security review, Maynard said. He said those might apply even to such acquisitions as an auto parts producer that makes a small portion of its sales to the U.S. military.

Last month, President Barack Obama blocked Chinese-owned Ralls Corp. from owning four wind farm projects in Oregon near a Navy base where the U.S. military flies unmanned drones. Obama acted after the same government review panel that rejected Huawei's acquisition of 3Leaf said there was no way to address possible security risks.

"This has the potential to cut both ways," said Maynard. "If you want American companies to be welcome in China, you need to be making them welcome in the U.S."
