Karl Rove: Paul Ryan 'Gets Under the President's Skin'

Political strategist Karl Rove says President Barack Obama's campaign is worried about vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan's ability to peel away traditional Democratic voters, given his strong re-election showings in a blue-collar Wisconsin congressional district with deep union roots.
?

His ability to talk simply about complicated issues such as Medicare and the federal debt also digs into the president's comfort level, Rove told Fox News' Neil Cavuto Wednesday.
?

"Paul Ryan gets under the president's skin because Paul does his homework, he is incredibly knowledgeable about these issues, and he can speak directly and respectful, and yet make his case," Rove said.
?

"Remember, this guy is from a swing district in Wisconsin that Bill Clinton carried twice, Al Gore carried, and Barack Obama carried. In his first election, he won with 57 percent of the vote." he said. "And in Ryan's re-elections, he has gotten between 62 percent and 68 percent of the vote in a blue-collar. middle-class district with a lot of union workers."
?

The reason he's been elected to seven terms in the House, Roved continued, is because Ryan has been going "out there" for the "better part of a decade" and taking on "the big issues of deficit, debt, spending, and entitlement reform."
?

But Rove said Ryan is facing a tougher challenge now as the Republican vice presidential nominee and "has to be reassuring" to both older and younger voters as he and presidential candidate Mitt Romney make their appeal for less government spending, beginning with changes to the Medicare program.
?

Rove, a Fox News contributor and founder of the super PAC Crossroads GPS, said the Romney-Ryan ticket would have to be reassuring as well as they talk about their plan for economic growth.
?

"We need a team of optimism and a belief in America," he said. "Mitt Romney has that belief in an American exceptionalism and in the American dream."
?

Rove was also asked by Cavuto about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's speech to the GOP convention in Tampa Tuesday.

Christie has been criticized for not delivering what Cavuto referred to as a "red meat" address to the delegates and not talking enough about the Romney-Ryan ticket.
?

Rove, however, defended Christie's speech, saying it was perfect in tone for the independent and undecided voters who may have been tuning in to the convention coverage.
?

"Look, Chris Christie's tone was absolutely right for the key audience, which is not the people in this room who are already totally committed to this ticket, but instead the people who are watching and trying to figure it out," Rove said. "And he had the right tone."

Death toll in Kenya riots over clerics death 4

MOMBASA, Kenya (AP) ? A prison official says two guards who were wounded in a grenade attack during riots in Kenya's second largest city of Mombasa have died.

James Kodiany, the Coast regional prisons boss, confirmed that two of his officers died Wednesday. Another prison officer died on Tuesday after a grenade was thrown into a truck carrying security officers on their way to quell rioters that had set fire to a church. The death of the prison officers raised the death toll from two days of rioting following the killing of Muslim cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed to four. A civilian was killed on Monday.

Mohammed, who was sanctioned by the U.S. and U.N. for his alleged support for an al-Qaida-linked militant group, was shot to Monday in his car.

Working moms spend less time daily on kids' diet, exercise, study finds

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

When it comes to cooking, grocery shopping and playing with children, American moms with full-time jobs spend roughly three-and-half fewer hours per day on these and other chores related to their children's diet and exercise compared to stay-at-home and unemployed mothers, reports a new paper by a Cornell University health economist.

Male partners do little to make up the deficit: Employed fathers devote just 13 minutes daily to such activities and non-working fathers contribute 41 minutes, finds the study, which will be printed in the December issue of Economics and Human Biology.

The findings are consistent across socio-economic lines measured by the mothers' education, family income, race and ethnicity.

To make up for this time deficit, working mothers are significantly more likely to spend time purchasing prepared foods ? takeout from restaurants or prepackaged, ready-to-eat meals from grocery stores ? which are generally less nutritious than home-cooked meals.

"It's inaccurate to pin rising childhood obesity rates on women, given that husbands pick up so little of the slack," cautioned lead author John Cawley, professor of policy analysis and management and of economics at Cornell's College of Human Ecology.

The study does not prove that employment alone drives the way mothers spends their time. "For example, mothers who choose to work might be those who enjoy cooking less and who would cook less whether working or not," Cawley said.

He added that working mothers produce additional benefits for children such as more money to provide for family needs.

"It's important to remember that we can take steps to enhance childhood nutrition and physical activity without advocating that women exit the workforce," Cawley said. For instance, the authors argue, parents should be better educated about the nutritional content of restaurant and prepackaged foods. "In order to make more informed decisions, consumers need to have nutrition and calorie information available where they buy their food," said Cawley, who noted that federal health care reform rules will soon require chain and fast-food restaurants nationwide to post calorie counts of the foods they sell.

Cawley noted that schools shoulder a greater burden for supporting healthy lifestyles.

"Our findings underscore the importance of schools offering high-quality foods and physical education classes," he said. "In general, the Institute of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are urging comprehensive changes in school environments to promote healthy eating and active living."

Chinese industrial profits fall in July

BEIJING (AP) ? Profits at China's industrial companies tumbled in July for a fourth straight month, a sign of enduring economic weakness that adds to pressure on Beijing to drive a sluggish recovery.

Total industrial profits declined 5.4 percent compared with a year earlier, accelerating from June's 1.3 percent fall, government data showed Monday. That might hurt investment, a key part of Beijing's recovery plan for China's deepest slump since the 2008 global crisis.

The decline follows July's collapse in export growth and weak consumer spending despite repeated stimulus measures. The slowdown has forced thousands of small companies to close, raising the threat of job losses and unrest as the Communist Party prepares to hand over power to younger leaders.

Lower profits might force the government to ease credit policy or step up spending to offset private sector weakness.

"This would suggest that policy easing is crucial to support the economy in the coming months," JP Morgan economists Haibin Zhu and Grace Ng said in a report.

Economic growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the second quarter. Analysts expect a rebound later this year but say it will be slow and too weak to drive global growth without improvement in the United States and debt-crippled Europe.

The profit figures showed a striking gap between the performance of state-owned companies, which receive government support and priority access to lending by government banks, and private sector companies that have struggled but are more flexible and efficient.

Profits for government-owned industrial enterprises fell 12.2 percent in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period last year, while private sector profits rose 15.5 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The figures cover companies in fields such as steel and chemical production, manufacturing of autos, electronics and machinery, oil and natural gas and power generation.

Beijing cut interest rates twice in June and is pumping money into the economy through higher spending on public works construction. But Communist leaders have resisted calls for more aggressive stimulus after huge spending in response to the 2008 crisis fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom.

Premier Wen Jiabao warned last month that the country's job situation will become "more complex and severe."

This weekend, Wen called for efforts to stabilize trade after July's export growth collapsed to 1 percent, well below forecasts, from the previous month's 11.3 percent expansion. He was visiting Guangdong province in the southeast, an export region that has been battered by weak foreign demand.

"The third quarter of the year is a critical period for China to realize the year's export growth target and we should take targeted steps to stabilize growth," Wen said, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

The report gave no indication of possible measures but Beijing previously has promised tax cuts and loans by state banks to help struggling exporters.

August manufacturing activity fell to a nine-month low, according to the preliminary version of HSBC Corp.'s monthly purchasing managers' index. It said new export orders fell at the fastest rate in three years.

The International Monetary Fund and private sector forecasters expect China's economy to grow by about 8 percent this year. That is robust compared with low single-digit growth expected in the United States and a contraction in Europe but painful for Chinese companies accustomed to a rapid expansion.

The government set a target of 10 percent trade growth this year. Trade grew by 9.2 percent over the first half but that fell to 7.8 percent for the first seven months of the year, making the annual target look increasingly hard to meet.

In the southeastern port of Wenzhou, an export center, a business association says 10 percent of its 3,000 member companies have closed and 20 percent are in trouble, the government newspaper China Daily reported Monday.

Personal computer makers like HP, Dell in desperate need of reboot ...

SAN FRANCISCO ? Hewlett-Packard Co. used to be known as a place where innovative thinkers flocked to work on great ideas that opened new frontiers in technology. These days, HP is looking behind the times.

Coming off a five-year stretch of miscalculations, HP is in such desperate need of a reboot that many investors have written off its chances of a comeback.

Consider this: Since Apple Inc. shifted the direction of computing with the release of the iPhone in June 2007, HP?s market value has plunged by 60 percent to $35 billion. During that time, HP has spent more than $40 billion on dozens of acquisitions that have largely turned out to be duds so far.

?Just think of all the value that they have destroyed,? ISI analyst Brian Marshall said. ?It has been a case of just horrible management.?

Marshall traces the bungling to the reign of Carly Fiorina, who pushed through an acquisition of Compaq Computer a decade ago despite staunch resistance from many shareholders, including the heirs of HP?s co-founders. After HP ousted Fiorina in 2005, other questionable deals and investments were made by two subsequent CEOS, Mark Hurd and Leo Apotheker.

HP hired Meg Whitman 11 months ago in the latest effort to salvage what remains of one of the most hallowed names in Silicon Valley 73 years after its start in a Palo Alto, Calif., garage.

The latest reminder of HP?s ineptitude came last week when the company reported an $8.9 billion quarterly loss, the largest in the company?s history. Most of the loss stemmed from an accounting charge taken to acknowledge that HP paid far too much when it bought technology consultant Electronic Data Systems for $13 billion in 2008.

HP might have been unchallenged for the ignominious title as technology?s most troubled company if not for one its biggest rivals, Dell Inc.

Like HP, Dell missed the trends that have turned selling PCs into one of technology?s least profitable and slowest growing niches. As a result, Dell?s market value has also plummeted by 60 percent, to about $20 billion, since the iPhone?s release.

That means the combined market value of HP and Dell ? the two largest PC makers in the U.S. ? is less than the $63 billion in revenue Apple got from iPhones and various accessories during just the past nine months.

The handheld, touch-based computing revolution unleashed by the iPhone and Apple?s 2010 introduction of the iPad isn?t the only challenge facing HP and Dell.

They are also scrambling to catch up in two other rapidly growing fields ? ?cloud computing? and ?Big Data.?

Cloud computing refers to the practice of distributing software applications over high-speed Internet connections from remote data centers so that customers can used them on any device with online access. Big Data is a broad term for hardware storage and other services that help navigate the sea of information flowing in from the increasing amount of work, play, shopping and social interaction happening online.

Both HP and Dell want a piece of the action because cloud computing and Big Data boast higher margins and growth opportunities than the PC business.

It?s not an impossible transition, as demonstrated by the once-slumping but now-thriving IBM Corp., a technology icon even older than HP. But IBM began its makeover during the 1990s under Louis Gerstner and went through its share of turmoil before selling its PC business to Lenovo Group in 2005. HP and Dell are now trying to emulate IBM, but they may be making their moves too late as they try to compete with IBM and Oracle Corp., as well as a crop of younger companies that focus exclusively on cloud computing or Big Data.

A revival at HP will take time, something that HP CEO Meg Whitman has repeatedly stressed during her first 11 months on the job.

?Make no mistake about it: We are still in the early stages of a turnaround,? Whitman told analysts during a conference call last week.

The problems Whitman is trying to fix were inherited from Apotheker and Hurd.

HP hired Apotheker after he was dumped by his previous employer. He lasted less than a year as HP?s CEO ? just long enough to engineer an $11 billion acquisition of business software maker Autonomy, another poorly performing deal that is threatening to lump HP with another huge charge.

Before Apotheker, Hurd won praise for cutting costs during his five-year reign at HP, but Marshall believes HP was too slow to respond to the mobile computing, cloud computing and Big Data craze that began to unfold under Hurd?s watch. HP also started its costly shopping spree while Hurd was CEO.

How much further will HP and Dell fall before they hit bottom?

HP?s revenue has declined in each of the past four quarters, compared with the same period a year earlier, and analysts expect the trend to extend into next year. The most pessimistic scenarios envision HP?s annual revenue falling from about $120 billion this year to $90 billion toward the end of this decade.

The latest projections for PC sales also paint a grim picture. The research firm IDC now predicts PC shipments this year will increase by less than 1 percent, down from its earlier forecast of 5 percent.

Whitman is determined to offset the crumbling revenue by trimming expenses. She already is trying to lower annual costs by $3.5 billion during the next two years, mostly by eliminating 27,000 jobs, or 8 percent of HP?s work force.

Marshall expects Whitman?s austerity campaign to enable HP to maintain its annual earnings at about $4 per share, excluding accounting charges, for the foreseeable future.

If HP can do that, Marshall believes the stock will turn out to be a bargain investment at last week?s closing price of $17.58, even though he isn?t expecting the business to grow during the next few years.

One of the main reasons that Marshall still likes HP?s stock at these levels is because of the company?s quarterly dividend of 13.2 cents per share. That translates into a dividend yield of about 3 percent, an attractive return during these times of puny interest rates.

Dell?s stock looks less attractive, partly because its earnings appear to still be dropping. The company, which is based in Round Rock, Texas, signaled its weakness last week, when it lowered its earnings projection for the current fiscal year by 20 percent.

Dell executives also indicated that the company is unlikely to get a sales lift from the Oct. 26 release of Microsoft Corp.?s much-anticipated makeover of its Windows operating system. That?s because Dell focuses on selling PCs to companies, which typically take a long time before they decide to switch from one version of Windows to the next generation.

As PC sales languish, both HP and Dell are likely to spend more on cloud computing, data storage and technology consulting.

Although those look like prudent bets now, HP and Dell probably should be spending more money trying to develop products and services that turn into ?the next new thing? in three or four years, said Erik Gordon, a University of Michigan law and business professor who has been tracking the troubles of both companies.

?It?s like they are both standing on the dock watching boats that have already sailed,? Gordon said. ?They are going to have to swim very fast just to have chance to climb back on one of the boats.?

Merkel tries to calm uproar over eurozone plans

By Noah Barkin and Paul Carrel, Reuters

BERLIN/FRANKFURT - Angela Merkel tried to calm a growing storm over eurozone crisis strategy on Sunday after the Bundesbank likened ECB bond-buying plans to a dangerous drug and a conservative ally of the German leader said Greece should leave the currency bloc by next year.

The comments, from central bank chief Jens Weidmann and a senior figure in the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), Alexander Dobrindt, point to mounting unease in Germany with the policies being used to combat the three-year old debt crisis.

Domestic criticism has narrowed Merkel's room for manoeuvre at a time when Greece is in dire need of more aid and policymakers are scrambling to prevent contagion from enveloping big countries like Spain and Italy.

Two days after Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras visited Berlin and made an impassioned plea for politicians there not to talk up the possibility of a Greek euro exit, Merkel herself sent a warning to allies who have said the euro zone would be better off without its weakest link.

"We are in a very decisive phase in combating the euro debt crisis," Merkel told public broadcaster ARD in an interview. "My plea is that everyone weigh their words very carefully."

Dobrindt, whose party is preparing for a regional election in Bavaria and the federal vote next autumn, told top-selling German daily Bild he expected Greece to leave the euro zone in 2013. His comments drew a swift rebuke from Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle who said "bullying" of euro members must stop.

In addition to Greece, policymakers have been sparing over European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's plans to buy up the bonds of Spain and Italy.

The ECB is assuming a greater role in the crisis while governments negotiate legal and political hurdles to coordinating a longer-term response. The bank's Italian head is expected to detail his plans after a Sept. 6 meeting of its 23-member governing council.

Merkel gave her tacit support to Draghi on a trip to Canada earlier this month and reiterated in the ARD interview that she believed the ECB's policies were in line with its mandate to ensure stable prices in the bloc.

Addictive
But Weidmann, a former economic adviser to Merkel, said in a front-page interview in influential German magazine Der Spiegel that the bond buys could violate rules against the ECB providing outright financing to governments.

"Such a policy is for me close to state financing via the printing press," Weidmann told Spiegel. "In democracies, it is parliaments and not central banks that should decide on such a comprehensive pooling of risks."

Financing governments has long been a taboo for Germany. Weidmann's predecessor as Bundesbank chief, Axel Weber, quit last year in protest at the ECB's existing, but now dormant, bond-buying scheme - the Securities Markets Programme (SMP).

"We should not underestimate the risk that central bank financing can become addictive like a drug," Weidmann said.

The Bundesbank retains substantial influence within Germany and on financial markets due to its inflation-fighting credentials but, as just one of 17 constituents at the ECB, it is unlikely it could scupper Draghi's plan.

Asked in the television interview whether she supported Weidmann, Merkel praised him for speaking out about his doubts and said she saw strong Bundesbank influence within the ECB as positive. But she took care not to voice any support for his criticism of Draghi's policies.

Central bank sources told Reuters on Friday that the ECB is considering setting yield band targets under the new bond-buying programme to allow it to keep its strategy shielded and avoid speculators trying to cash in.

Weidmann said setting such yield band targets was a "sensitive notion" but rejected suggestions that he was isolated on the ECB Governing Council in having such reservations.

"I hardly believe that I am the only one to get a stomach ache over this," he said.

Dobrindt was more direct, saying Draghi risked passing into the history books as the "currency forger of Europe".

Sticking to commitments
With the 'troika' of the EU, ECB and International Monetary Fund preparing to return to Greece to assess the plight of the euro zone's weakest link, Austria's chancellor said Athens should get more time to repay its debts, provided it sticks to reforms.

"I see quite a good chance that we will arrive at an outcome with Greece that the Greeks stick to their agreements with the EU but in return get more time for the repayment," Werner Faymann told newspaper Oesterreich.

"The most important thing is that the Greeks stick to the reforms and savings targets agreed with us. If that is guaranteed, I am in favour of a delay in the repayment," he said, adding that the delay could be two or three years.

But Germany's finance and economy ministers both reaffirmed their opposition to any easing of the timeframe for Greece, stressing that giving it more time would mean giving it more money. Samaras has said he needs more time but not more cash.

Samaras elicited no promises from Merkel or from French President Francois Hollande, whom the Greek leader met in Paris on Saturday. No final decisions on Greece are expected before the troika delivers its report in October.

Merkel said she had come away from her talks with Samaras convinced that he was serious about the Greek reform drive, but made clear that the pressure on Athens was extremely high. "Every day counts," she said.

Daily Life of a Blended Family Tips - This Lil Piglet

The daily life of a blended family can be challenging at times. ?In the beginning it may or may not be?sunshine and rainbows?but rest assured there will be?moments?that will test the boundaries of your love, of your bonds and your patience. ?Assumedly both parties can be civil and co-parent for the benefit of the children but this is not always the case for various reasons not to be judged. ?Obviously co-parenting makes managing a blended family much easier but in the case of parallel parenting there are ways to accomplish this and make daily life of a blended family easier on everybody in your family.

?

Blended families naturally have more challenges than the single family unit; there are at least two sets of families now involved, four if both parents remarry which is our case, or more if those new partners have previous partners and children. ?It can be complicated. ?The single most important thing to remember is that the children didn?t choose this life; making the transition as easy as possible on them will determine how smoothly things will run.

?

In the beginning my kids had a very hard time transitioning and with the environment of two very different homes. ?I sought out age appropriate books to help my kids accept the dissolve of the single family and later to learn how to accept a blended family situation when I was remarried 3 years after the divorce.

You cannot control how the other parent will choose to parent or whether or not they will be a positive role model but you can determine the morals and environment you will raise your children in on your time. ?Here are a few mindful tips to help ease your blended family daily life and make it a happy and loving one.

?

1. ?Focus on the positives. ?The more positive you are, the less problems and individual insecurities your children will have.

2. ?Remember the step-parent is not a replacement parent. ?How lucky are they to have more people to love and support them.

3. ? Spend quality individual time with each child, build that bond and keep it strong.

4. ?ALWAYS treat and love children equally. Spend time as a family regularly. ?This sounds like an obvious but is not always the case, sometimes not intentionally, in blended families; some parents favour their own children over their step-children. Children are very smart; they notice more than you would think.

5. ?Stand as a team unit and discipline together. ?This will ensure the children have no questions about the rules of your house or question each of your parenting decisions.

6. ?Create boundaries and stand by them. ?This can have to do with discipline, morals for your own household or boundaries for the other biological parent during your access time with your children.

7. ?Be consistant. ?I cannot stress this enough. Children need stability, even in the chaos blended families can create you can create a stable home by being consistant in your schedule, in your rules and discipline and in your treatment.

8. ?Be patient. ?Resistance can create problems bonding in a blended family but if you are consistant and patient, it will come.

9. ?Spend time as a couple. ?Do not forget to connect with each other; this will keep your love strong and show your children the importance of a good relationship.

10. ?LISTEN. ?Let your children vent if they need to but remember children have a different way of looking at things; their views of the situation aren?t always reality. ?They do not need feedback other than listening to their worries, giving them a hug/kiss, reminding them they are loved and that you are there to listen any time. ?Focus on your time together on your access time with your children and not the other parent.

?

There is not a set standard for families, as with single home families every blended family is different. ?Focus less on what you think society or the other parent expects from you and more on these tips and you will create a loving, happy home with less chaos and most everything else will fall into place.

?

This post was written in response to the Mom Central Blogger Grant Program Winter 2011 Recipient. ?I received notice of selection late March of this year at a time when our co-parenting situation was strained and?parallel?parenting had to be accepted with a heavy heart. ?I restrained from writing this post until I was far enough removed from the situation to remain with a positive outlook and learnings to pass along. ?I hope for the best for you all.

Mo. lawmaker still defiant, won't quit Senate race

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Rep. Todd Akin defied the nation's top Republicans and refused to abandon a Senate bid that has been hobbled by fallout over his comments that women's bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape."

Akin took his message to network TV morning shows and conservative talk radio shows, declaring GOP leaders were overreacting by insisting he abandon his quest to unseat Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri, and to social media with appeals for donations on his Twitter feed claiming "liberal elites" are trying to push him out of the race.

"I misspoke one word in one sentence on one day, and all of a sudden, overnight, everybody decides, 'Well, Akin can't possibly win,'" he said on a national radio show Tuesday hosted by former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. "Well, I don't agree with that."

Akin predicted he would bounce back from the political crisis threatening his campaign, including a call from presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney to leave the race, and capture a seat that is pivotal to Republican hopes of regaining control of the Senate.

He confirmed that Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan also called to ask him to drop out. But Akin reiterated his decision to stand his ground, saying he refused to be bullied.

"It's not right for party bosses to override" the voters of Missouri, Akin said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" Wednesday. He said he told Ryan that he was thinking things over and that he wants to "do what's right," but that he's not abandoning his race

Nonetheless, he said he would comply with Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus's request that he not attend the convention, which starts Monday.

But his bid faces tall obstacles ? chief among them a lack of money and party support.

In a potential sign of his strategy, Akin appealed Tuesday to Christian evangelicals, anti-abortion activists and anti-establishment Republicans. He said he remains the best messenger to highlight respect for life and liberty that he contends are crumbling under the policies of President Barack Obama.

In addition, he solicited donations on his website and twitter account late Tuesday claiming in several messages that it was the "liberal elite," not establishment Republicans, trying to push him out of the race.

If he stays on the ballot, Akin will have to rebuild without any money from the national party and with new misgivings among rank-and-file Republican voters who just two weeks ago propelled him to a comfortable victory in a hotly contested three-way primary.

"I'm in this race for the long haul, and we're going to win it," he told radio host Dana Loesch in St. Louis.

Akin appealed to evangelicals directly during his interview with Huckabee, making allusions to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and focusing on the idea he had only misplaced a single word during a Sunday interview with St. Louis television station KTVI.

But Akin has been roundly criticized both for using the words "legitimate rape" and saying a woman's body has the ability to prevent conception after such an attack.

Hours earlier, Akin posted an online video in which he apologized again for his remarks. Campaign spokesman Ryan Hite said the apology was intended to cover the reference to "legitimate rape" and Akin's assertion that rape victims have a natural defense against pregnancy. The video will run as a 30-second ad on TV stations statewide for several days, Hite said.

Tuesday was the final day in which Akin could withdraw from the race without a court order. As the 5 p.m. deadline to withdraw neared, Republican leaders intensified their pressure on Akin to exit.

Sen. Roy Blunt issued a joint statement Tuesday with all four of Missouri's living former Republican senators ? John Ashcroft, Kit Bond, Jim Talent and John Danforth ? saying "it serves the national interest" for Akin to step aside.

Pointing to the group, Romney said the congressman should "accept their counsel."

A Romney aide said the candidate had been inclined to let Akin make the decision on his own. But after the Missouri lawmakers called for Akin to go, Romney wanted to make his position clear, said the aide, who requested anonymity because the aide was not authorized to publicly discuss Romney's thinking.

Akin provoked the political uproar when he was asked in the KTVI interview whether his general opposition to abortion extends to women who have been raped.

"It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said.

It's not clear if Akin's campaign will have the financial support to wage a prolonged advertising battle against McCaskill in the expensive St. Louis and Kansas City markets and the Republican-rich area of southwest Missouri.

The campaign arm of the Senate Republicans has already withdrawn $5 million in advertising planned for the Missouri race. The Karl Rove-backed Crossroads organization pulled its ads too. A fundraiser planned in Washington for next month was called off after all of the dozen GOP senators who had agreed to participate pulled out.

Crossroads President and CEO Steven Law suggested Tuesday that Akin was potentially helping Democrats retain their Senate majority by remaining in the race.

"The stakes in this election are far bigger than any one individual," said Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. By staying in the race, Akin "is putting at great risk many of the issues that he and others in the Republican Party are fighting for."

Without that financial backing, Akin will need the support of social conservatives, who have formed his political base through a 12-year congressional career.

Noreen McCann, who lives in the same suburban St. Louis area as Akin, said Tuesday that his rape comment hasn't weakened her support for him. McCann expressed frustration that Akin was being publicly flayed for his ill-chosen words while other Democrats ? specifically President Bill Clinton ? have survived scandals that included accusations of sexual impropriety and lies.

Akin "is a man of principle. I trust and respect his integrity and his commitment to defending American values," said McCann, who had passed out Akin fliers on primary election day. "I think he wants to defend all innocent human life. If he misspoke, or it was in the wrong context, that is not a major problem for me."

But other Missouri Republicans are second-guessing their support for Akin.

Steven and Carolyn Sipes, a pair of retired public school teachers who are GOP committee members in southwest Missouri's Christian County, both voted for Akin in the primary. Carolyn is now doing some soul-searching prayer about whether Akin remains the best choice. Her husband believes Republicans would have a better shot of unseating McCaskill without Akin.

"If he decides to stay in, I'll back him to the hilt," Steven Sipes said. But "I think it would be better probably if he did drop out at this point. He's getting a lot of negative publicity."

Akin's campaign released an open letter Tuesday from Jack Willke, former president of the U.S. National Right to Life Committee, stating he was "outraged at how quickly Republican leaders have deserted" Akin.

Akin "remains a strong and courageous pro-life leader ? and awkward wording in one sound bite doesn't negate that," Willke's statement said.

FOR KIDS: Elephant songs

Scientists figure out how elephants make their low, low rumble

Web edition : 12:01 pm

Elephants are well known for their trumpetlike sounds, but they can ?sing? superlow songs, too. You?ll never hear these tunes in full, though. That?s because elephant songs include notes too low for the human ear to hear.

Some scientists had suggested that elephants make these low sounds in the same way that cats purr ? by squeezing muscles near the voice box, or larynx. But elephants don?t need to use throat muscles to go low, say scientists in a newly published?study.

Smallknot: Small business investing for anyone | MNN - Mother ...

The buy local movement is growing in the United States but one new startup is adding a twist to this trend: investing local as well. Smallknot is a new small business investing site that lets everyday consumers support small businesses in our communities in exchange for good and services.

?

Smallknot works only with small, local business owners who need a financial boost to expand. ?Maybe your favorite coffee shop wants to build a new back patio, or your favorite pizza place needs a new oven. For a lot of local businesses, even very successful ones, projects like these get put on hold or never happen because of a lack of access to capital,? says the?Smallknot?website.

?

Projects like these may only cost a few thousand dollars, but in a slowly recovering economy, it isn?t exactly easy for the business owner to front the money. This also isn?t typically the lending realm of financial giants like Bank of America, and so this is where Smallknot comes into play.

?

Jay Lee, CEO of Smallknot, explained more about the company during a recent email interview.

?

MNN: When was Smallknot founded?

Jay Lee: It depends on what you mean by founded! I first left my career as a securities lawyer in June 2011 with nothing more than a belief and concept of local investment, but no real ability to execute on my own. I spent months as a solo founder just thinking about ways to make this work. I brought on my first co-founder Ben Rossen in October 2011, but the full founding team didn't come together until March 2012 when our CTO Jason Punzalan joined as a co-founder. We launched our current platform in mid-June 2012. ? ?

?

What was the inspiration behind Smallknot?

At its core, Smallknot just stemmed from witnessing the madness of the financial system from the inside and understanding the value of small businesses in our communities. Ben and I had spent years deep on the legal side of the financial world of investment banks, billion-dollar deals and massive global capital flows. We lived and played in local restaurants, retail, bars and other spots, but until the collapse of Lehman and the credit crunch that decimated the small business economy, we had always taken the vitality of our neighborhoods for granted. There was just a moment when we stepped back and realized that it was simple to move all of our retirement savings and investments into huge companies across the world, but there was no way to take the smallest bit of capital and invest it into the small business 50 yards away. That felt ridiculous. My local coffee shop and bookstore are the places where my life actually happens, and there is really no way to take an active role in its success. So, we're trying to do just that. ?

?

How many companies have received funding from a Smallknot campaign?? How much has been awarded thus far?

So far we have successfully funded 8 businesses and expect 2 more in the coming week or so and we will have helped fund nearly $60,000 in small business capital within the last couple of months. Things are picking up though, so we expect those numbers to start climbing dramatically in the coming months. ?

?

How do companies apply for a Smallknot campaign?

Small business owners are the busiest people alive, so it's vital that the process is simple. As of today, just send us an email at ben@smallknot.com or jay@smallknot.com and we can walk you through the process very quickly and easily. Within the next couple of weeks, we will roll out our self-service application process so business owners can run the process themselves. We built it to be as simple and easy as possible, so a business owner seeking funding on Smallknot can simply log onto the site and apply to build and run a campaign. ??

?

Where do you see Smallknot in one year?? Five years?

Ultimately, our vision is to build a platform for communities to finance themselves and in the process, build the connective tissue between businesses and their communities. A new way to promote community self ?empowerment. Geographically, we would like to be in over a dozen cities around the country within the year. Within five years, we want to be the place where aspiring entrepreneurs and successful business owners can go to get the capital they need to help them grow and thrive, and the place where everyone feels empowered to get directly involved in building their local economy and building the community they want to live in. ?

?

*****

?

One of the campaigns currently live on the site is Neighborhoodies, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company that is launching a new clothing collection while creating jobs for single moms. With a $75 investment in the campaign, you will receive a customized super heavy-duty hoodie and a one-month membership to The Mutual. If you have $1,000 to invest you'll receive 25 custom hoodies. There are only a couple of days left in the Neighborhoodies campaign, and the company is close to reaching its goal.

?

I already buy local whenever I can and so I?m excited to see Smallknot grow to be the company that Lee wants it to be. I love the idea of financially supporting a small business that in turn will help support the community. I always see the phrase ?small businesses are the backbone of our economy? and with Smallknot?s help, these small businesses will help boost the economy in the neighborhoods they serve.

?

An Introvert?s Photographer

Martine Franck Martine Franck, 1975.

Henri Cartier-Bresson/Magnum Photos.

When a much-admired but slightly out of the spotlight figure passes away, you often hear them described as a ?writer?s writer? or a? ?photographer?s photographer.? And when one is married to one of the most famous photographers in history (Henri Cartier-Bresson), she risks being pigeonholed as her ?husband?s wife.? Belgian photographer Martine Franck, who died last week at 74, was an unusual artist, deserving of recognition for her own unique visual and personal strengths.

For me personally, Martine was an introvert?s photographer?a role model for those of us who find strength in quiet observation. A couple of days before her death, I read a quote by Martine that hit home for me: ?I was very ill at ease with people in social situations, and I realized that if I photographed I wouldn?t have to chat.? I?ve heard many photographers describe the act of photographing as their way of interacting with the world, but there?s something about this blunt confession that stands out.

However, Martine didn?t see photography as an isolating endeavor. Instead she used it as a platform to work with other artists: Creativity should build upon creativity and artists should support one another. Throughout her career of more than 50 years, she photographed artists, writers, curators, and professors. She rarely made formal portraits but rather images of character. The list of thinkers?Willem de Kooning, Agnes Varda, Paul Strand, Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, among them?who appear in her vast portfolio reads like the guest list for my ideal dinner party. Many of them relay a certain casual intimacy, as if everyone has just shared wine and homemade chocolate mousse.

Martine Franck/Magnum Photos.

Martine joined Magnum Photos in 1980, serving in various leadership positions within the organization until her death.? She never fit the traditional paradigm of the ?documentary photographer,? however. She didn?t photograph war or famine. Her greatest work took as its subject the intellectual landscape of humanity. Her photographs evoke a sense of serenity and an eye for design in the world around her. Martine found architecture in the landscape, both built and natural.

Over the past week, it?s been maddening to see that so much of the writing in her memory has positioned her in relationship to her husband. Headlines announce the passing of the legend?s wife, and quotes de-emphasize the importance of her own photography. Looking through her work, her project on aging and Buddhism, her documentation of the performance company Theatre du Soleil, it?s clear that her career was extraordinary, quiet, and purposeful. Their marriage was a meeting of rare minds, and I have little doubt that they learned from each other.

Within Magnum, Martine?s presence was one of stability and calm. Magnum?s current president, Alex Majoli, described her as ?a lighthouse, a point of reference.?

Martine was incredibly kind to me?a member of Magnum?s staff, on the quiet side, interested perhaps more in the calm, cerebral human landscape than the blast of the battlefields. I wanted to do her proud with a comprehensive edit of her work and my initial attempt at a slide show yielded 468 ?finalists? that I wish I could share. Instead, I?m giving you a hint of that creativity-filled dinner party and hope that you?ll raise a glass in Martine?s memory.

In addition to daycare and boarding, it also offers a spa, self-service dog wash, and boutique to pamper pooches. Dogtopia's clients enjoy an open layout with play equipment and special rubber flooring to ease joints, prevent slipping, and provide a safer play area.

Myanmar government ends direct media censorship

(AP) ? Myanmar abolished direct censorship of the media Monday in the most dramatic move yet toward allowing freedom of expression in the long-repressed nation. But related laws and practices that may lead to self-censorship raise doubt about how much will change.

Under the new rules, journalists will no longer have to submit their work to state censors before publication as they for almost half a century. However, the same harsh laws that have allowed Myanmar's rulers to jail, blacklist and control the media in the name of protecting national security remain unchanged and on the books.

For decades, this Southeast Asian nation's reporters had been regarded as among the most restricted in the world, subjected to routine state surveillance, phone taps and censorship so intense that independent papers could not publish on a daily basis. President Thein Sein's reformist government has significantly relaxed media controls over the last year, though, allowing reporters to print material that would have been unthinkable during the era of absolute military rule ? like photographs of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Information Ministry, which has long controlled what can be printed, made the announcement on its website Monday. The head of the ministry's Press Scrutiny and Registration Department, Tint Swe, also conveyed the news to a group of editors in the country's main city Yangon. The move had been expected for months but was repeatedly delayed as the government struggles to draft a new media law to overhaul the industry here.

Tint Swe previously said the censor board itself would be abolished when censorship ends. But Monday's announcement indicated the board will stay and retain the powers it has always had to suspend publications or revoking publishing licenses if they deem publishing rules are violated.

Nyein Nyein Naing, an editor from the Seven Day News Journal who attended Monday's meeting, said journalists will still have to submit their articles to the censor board. But now, she said, they will be required to do so after publication, apparently to allow the government to determine whether any publishing laws are violated.

Those laws, in place since a military coup in 1962, include edicts prohibiting journalists from writing articles that could threaten peace and stability, oppose the constitution or insult ethnic groups. Critics say some laws are open to interpretation and give the government enormous power to go after its critics. They have been used repeatedly in recent years to jail members of the press.

Nyein Nyein Naing welcomed the government announcement, as did other journalists in Myanmar. But she added: "We have to be very cautious as (the state censor board) will keep monitoring us."

It was not immediately clear to what degree continued government scrutiny could lead to self-censorship. Some topics remain highly sensitive, like corruption and alleged abuses committed by army officers during the previous ruling junta. Overzealous authorities could use the threat of prosecution to prevent articles from being published or exact harsh punishments for material they don't like.

Late last month, the censor board wielded some of that power by ordering the suspension of two weekly magazines ? The Voice Weekly and Envoy ? for speculating on a still-anticipated Cabinet reshuffle. Those punishments have since been lifted, and the two magazines are due to begin publishing again on Aug. 18.

Shawn Crispin, the Committee to Protect Journalist's Southeast Asia representative in Bangkok, said that "if the government is sincere in ending pre-publication censorship, it would represent a significant step forward for press freedom in Burma." Myanmar is also called Burma.

However, if press laws are not reformed as well, "then all of these promises can be easily rolled back if they feel a free press threatens government security," Crispin said.

Since last year, when the nation's long-entrenched military junta ceded power to a nominally civilian administration dominated by retired army officers, censorship has ended on subjects such as health, entertainment, fashion and sports. Media outlets publishing such topics ? deemed less sensitive ? were allowed to publish without submitting their work to state censors beforehand.

Monday's announcement means the rest ? more than 140 newspapers and magazines focused on things like politics and religion ? will have the same freedoms.

Tint Swe said, however, that independent papers were not yet allowed to publish on a daily basis, despite the change. But he added: "That is coming soon."

Wide Moat Investing: How Buffett Protects His Portfolio

by Alexander Green, Investment U Chief Investment Strategist
Monday, August 20, 2012: Issue #1842

In ancient and medieval times, castles and even entire towns often built a moat ? a deep ditch filled with water ? as a preliminary line of defense to deter the enemy.

The same technique is essential in the world of equity investing, too. In a capitalistic society likes ours, you can be sure that if someone has found a profitable niche, it isn?t long before others show up to exploit it. This is generally a positive development for consumers who quickly see prices plunge. But it?s a different matter for business owners who just as regularly see profit margins wither up and die.

Two prime examples are Circuit City and Borders. The first sold consumer electronics, the latter books, music and DVDs. Both had razor-thin operating margins and virtually nothing to protect them from competitors, either online or in the brick-and-mortar world. Selling commodity products available from anyone, both wound up in bankruptcy.

What provides an effective moat in our competitive marketplace? A few examples are patents, trademarks, brand names, regulatory complexity and huge economies of scale.

Examples of Effective Moats

Take patents, for example. One of the reasons for Apple?s (Nasdaq: AAPL) extraordinary success is that most of its products are patent-protected. The Mac operating system is not licensed to other vendors. And iPods, iPhones and iPads have many patent protections, too. (Some of these are currently being disputed in court with Samsung.) Likewise, a former big winner in The Oxford Club?s Trading Portfolio was Intuitive Surgical (Nasdaq: ISRG), a company with a patented monopoly on the manufacture and sale of surgical robots.

Another effective moat is early adoption. This has been a huge benefit for Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG). When I shop online, I don?t even bother checking other retailers. If I do a search, it?s always through Google. A service becomes increasingly valuable as more people adopt it.

Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) is a company whose business is protected by brand names. Coke offers quality and reliability in all its products, something that isn?t generally established with upstart soda companies.

Altria (NYSE: MO) actively supports much federal government regulation of the tobacco industry. Why? Because it knows regulatory hurdles and liabilities deter potential competition. Tough regulatory oversight is itself a moat.

Other companies benefit from sheer economies of scale. Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT), BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) and General Electric (NYSE: GE) are just a few examples. Their bargaining power with suppliers, state-of-the-art technology and access to ultra-low-cost financing allow them to underprice ? and thereby deter ? a lot of potential competition.

The Last Thing You Want to Do?

Investment great Warren Buffett declares that he seeks ?economic castles protected by unbreachable ?moats.?? He once bought shares of Guinness PLC because, as he put it, ?It?s easier to break into the semiconductor industry than into the spirits industry.?

Buffett knows that wide-moat companies can parlay their moats into higher returns on capital. Indeed, you would be hard-pressed to find a better list of wide-moat companies than to simply look at Berkshire Hathaway?s list of long-term equity holdings.

In short, we live in a Darwinian economic world where companies compete to survive. Businesses without moats are vulnerable. And the last thing you want to do is own a vulnerable company in a weak economy.

Good Investing,

Alex

Light my Fire: Gov't Subsidized Automaker Recalls Hybrid Model ...

Electric-car maker Fisker Automotive is recalling all of its $100,000 Karma sports sedans to fix cooling fans that can catch fire. The recall comes after Fisker and a private fire investigation firm finished probing an Aug. 10 fire in a Karma in Woodside, Calif.

It was the second of its kind.

The company said the probe found that the blaze started in front of the Karma?s left front wheel where a cooling fan is located. Wiring in the fan failed and it overheated, causing the slow-burning fire, Fisker said Saturday.

Fisker said in a statement that the fire had nothing to do with car?s lithium-ion battery or other ?new technology? components:

The investigation located the ignition source to the left front of the Karma, forward of the wheel, where the low temperature cooling fan is located. The final conclusion was that this sealed component had an internal fault that caused it to fail, overheat and start a slow burning fire.

?This incident resulted from a single, faulty component,? Executive Chairman and co-founder Henrik Fisker said in the statement.

Financially speaking, the recall isn?t going to help Fisker, which has received $193 million of a $529 million federal loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy. Oh, and in case you weren?t aware, the company also has a midsize sedan, the Atlantic, in development, but that project has been on hold ever since the DOE suspended Fisker?s loan following the Karma battery trouble.

So, between the fan problem and the fact that the Karma had to be recalled earlier this summer because of coolant leak issues ? and despite Fisker?s assurances that the fan recall is not expected to have a ?material financial impact? ? it looks like the government subsidized automaker is having some serious problems.

?[T]hings ? are so bad that also last week Fisker announced its third CEO hire in the past year (when in a supremely ironic move it hired the former head of the Chevy Volt program Tony Posawatz),? Zero Hedge notes.

?Oh well: nothing that burning, quite literally, severeal [sic] hundred more million in taxpayer funding won?t solve,? the Hedge adds.
