fate, ripped abs + the lie behind self-improvement | Justine Musk

My friend and trainer told me a story from when he was living and dating in New York City.

He was working as a male model and acting in commercials. He didn?t like telling strangers this when they asked the ?what do you do?? question because he found the consequent conversation (?Have I seen you in anything??) awkward and tedious. (?Well, I was in a New York Times commercial?I was the guy reading the sports section?.?)

So when women asked him what he did, he told them, ?I?m a dentist.?

?Oh,? they would say, and drop the subject.

One night he hit it off with a French ballerina passing through town. They went back to his place. They got really, really friendly. She ripped open his shirt, saw his ripped abs, and said in her thick French accent, ?You?re no dentist!?

And he had to admit that he wasn?t.

I like this story partly because I like what it says about identity, how it?s written right into your body. We like to say, in this culture of obsessive self-improvement, ?You can be anybody you want to be? ? but I don?t think that?s true.

In his book FATE AND DESTINY, Michael Meade defines ?fate? as the cross-section of genetics, environment and events that shapes our possibilities. We are born into a very particular set of limitations and gifts. If we accept our limitations (?I am scattered and disorganized?) and discover and develop our gifts (?I am highly creative?), we can come to a strongly grounded sense of who we?re meant to be and what we?re meant to do in this lifetime. But it?s not a matter of becoming anybody you want to be ? because you can only become more (or less) of what you already are.

It?s more a matter of, as Hugh MacLeod likes to say, remembering who you are. And a big part of that is remembering who you are not.

You?re no dentist.

Remembering is necessary because You can be anybody you want to be has a way of turning into You can be who you?re supposed to be. It?s the box that you?re supposed to fit into. That box is composed of many things that all boil down to one thing: the expectations of others. You?re a girl ? or a boy ? so you?re supposed to be and act a certain way. You?re a member of this family or that culture so you?re supposed to behave and believe and choose your goals accordingly.

You can be anybody you want to be has a way of turning into You can be anybody that they want you to be.

And you can?t.

(Sorry.)

But when you rip open that shirt to find the ripped abs of truth ? when you remember who you are ? the question then becomes: Do you declare yourself?

Or do you keep yourself in hiding to avoid uncomfortable conversations?

Problem is when we role-play, we start to believe what we thought we were only pretending.

The truth of who we are slips away. We forget ourselves all over again.

Say it enough times and you might start to think that you are, in fact, a dentist. Until life finds some way to force you to know otherwise.

There are a number of things happening under the hood of Tropical Storm Ewiniar's clouds that have been deciphered by satellite data today, Sept. 28, 2012, and NASA's TRMM satellite has noticed one area of heavy rainfall remaining.

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite noticed light to moderate rainfall around most of the tropical storm, with the heaviest rainfall east of the center of circulation. Rainfall in that area was falling at a rate of 2 inches (50 mm) per hour).

Tropical Storm Ewiniar has a partially exposed low-level circulation center, which opens the lower level of the storm to outside winds that can adversely affect it. Satellite data also revealed that there are bands of convective thunderstorms wrapping around the center from the southeast to the northern quadrant of the storm. Within that band, the strongest thunderstorms are on the eastern quadrant. In addition, microwave satellite data shows an eye feature today, Sept. 28.

As Tropical Storm Ewiniar continues to move northward it remains embedded in an elongated area of low pressure (called a trough) off Japan's east coast. The trough continues to bring strong westerly winds into Ewiniar at a rate of speed between 40 and 50 knots. Although facing this strong wind shear, Ewiniar continues to keep its tropical warm core.

On Sept. 28 at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Ewiniar's maximum sustained winds dropped from 55 knots (63.2 mph/102 kmh) to 45 knots (51.7 mph/83.3 kmh). It was located near 32.3 North and 143.5 East, about 280 nautical miles (322 miles/518.6 km) southeast of Tokyo, Japan and further away since Sept. 27. Ewiniar is moving to the east-northeast at 8 knots (9.2 mph/14.8 kmh) and is expected to turn to the northeast over the weekend of Sept. 29 and 30, and farther away from Japan.

$7 Renoir painting may been stolen property

Potomack Company via AP

This undated image provided by the Potomack Company shows French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Paysage Bords de Seine," which was purchased for $7 at a flea market in West Virginia.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

The Renoir painting that caused a sensation when it was bought at a flea market for $7 may have been stolen from a museum six decades ago, and an auction house has put its sale on hold.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir's painting "Paysage Bords de Seine" was due to go to auction through the Potomack Company on Saturday, but its sale was put on hold after a Washington Post reporter discovered documents in the Baltimore Museum of Art's library showing it was on loan there from 1937 until 1951, when it was stolen.

The Impressionist work, whose title translates as "Landscape on the Banks of the Seine," was purchased two years ago at a West Virginia flea market.

The buyer, a Virginia woman who has not revealed her name, took it to auction house The Potomack Co. in July, and experts there confirmed it was by the French master Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The frame of the painting includes a "Renoir" plaque.

"I originally bought it for the frame," the buyer admitted to NBCWashington.com earlier this month. "I was trying to rip it apart... I was like, well, maybe I should wait." The buyer's mother encouraged her to get it appraised.

It was expected to fetch $75,000 to $100,000 at auction.?

"The rest of the auction will go on, but the Renoir has been withdrawn," said Lucie Holland, a spokeswoman for The Potomack Co.

Read the story on NBCWashington.com

Potomack said that the?London-based Art Loss Registry had said that the painting had never been reported stolen or missing and the FBI's art theft website did not list it as stolen either. There was also no police report from the theft.

The FBI is now investigating.

'Caught by surprise'
The Renoir came to the Baltimore museum through one of its leading benefactors, collector Saidie May. Her family?bought it from the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris in 1926.

The Washington Post found records in the museum's library on Tuesday that showed May had lent the paintings and other works to the museum in 1937, Potomack said.

After the newspaper told it of the findings, the Baltimore museum checked its files and found a loan record showing the Renoir had been stolen on November 17, 1951. What happened to it after the theft is unknown.

Doreen Bolger, the museum director, said the museum's probe into what happened to the painting was in early stages.

May died in May 1951 and the art collection was willed to the museum. As its ownership was going through legal transfer, the painting was stolen while still listed as on loan.

?

The Mona Lisa Foundation, based in Switzerland, is claiming Leonardo da Vinci painted an earlier version of the Mona Lisa. Is she or isn't she? NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

"We were caught by surprise," Bolger said on Thursday.

"At this point we just want to make sure that the painting winds up where it belongs and that we provide all the information we can to law enforcement about this issue," Bolger said.?

She said that she would be happy to show the painting again if it is ultimately returned to the museum.

NBC News staff, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Diploma in Civil Engineering

One of the oldest and most important engineering disciplines in the world is civil engineering. Many buildings and structures have evoked our amazement, right from the pyramids of Egypt to the TajMahal in India and all these bear testament to the rich legacy of civil engineering.

Civil engineering can be defined as a specialised branch of engineering that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, buildings, dams and other structures. Human civilization cannot exist without major contributions from this branch of engineering and it is thus an indispensable discipline.

Civil Engineers are usually employed in construction activities in both the private and public sectors. They can also become a research fellow or a lecturer in universities. Further opportunities for these technical guys include being a surveyor, a technical report writer or even a project manager. Thus the possibilities and avenues for growth are endless. These specialised technical personnel have to have an eye for detail and an inherent ability to improvise.

The engineers involve themselves in feasibility and technical studies and conduct detailed investigations in the initial stages itself to avoid costly lapses in the later stages. The design and architectural aspects of the building are also studied in detail to ensure that the project complies with existing regulatory guidelines. Further, a risk and personnel management plan is formulated to ensure that safety aspects of any project are not compromised.

Further, these engineers must have good leadership skills to ensure that they have the right attitude to interact with personnel involved in the project right from labourers to high profile stake holders.

Equipment quality and reliability is another important aspect for which these engineers are responsible for and they have to ensure that near misses and accidents do not happen in the construction site. A good knowledge of finance is required to ensure that the project is completed within budget in a timely and efficient manner. Thus a civil engineer needs to be an all rounder.

They have a very challenging work environment and are one of the best paid professionals in the world. Job satisfaction is also high since the spirit of ?I helped build that? runs through the blood of every civil engineer.

Elumalai Polytechnic located in Villupuram has been a pioneer in the field of polytechnic education and the college has ensured that its graduates are one of the most competent diploma civil engineers.

The polytechnic is headed by Mr. Swamikannu an eminent industrialist and philanthropist.

The polytechnic helps to lay a strong foundation to ensure that the diploma graduates are ready for higher study in civil engineering. In case the graduates want to enter the industry, the polytechnic ensures that it equips them with the necessary skills to make them industry ready.

The civil engineering department has excellent and experienced teachers with a skilled support staff. The department has modern and well equipped labs and also undertakes consultancy work for the industry.

The department also arranges for lectures on various topics by industry leaders to broaden the perspective of the students and inspire them to think creatively. The students are also taken on industry site visits as a part of their curriculum like the Ferro Cement Research Centre in Pondicherry, Structural Research Centre in Chennai etc. This is to encourage the students to think innovatively during their project period and also to establish some interaction with the industry leaders.

With the real estate boom in the recent years, the need for civil engineers has increased exponentially. Elumalai Polytechnic has been sustaining this industrial growth by producing some of the best diploma engineers year after year. With a strong legacy and bright future, the opportunities are simply limitless in this evergreen field.

FBI to investigate officer shooting double-amputee

John Garcia stands in front of his home Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, in Houston, where police say an officer shot and killed a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair inside the group home. Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said the man cornered the officer in his wheelchair and was making threats while trying to stab the officer with the pen. At the time, the officer did not know what the metal object was that the man was waving, Silva said. (AP Photo/Houston Chronicle, Cody Duty)

(AP) ? A caretaker at a group home for the mentally ill called police in the middle of the night because a one-armed, one-legged man in a wheelchair was angry and wouldn't calm down.

What happened next is the subject of an investigation that now involves the FBI. One of the two Houston police officers who entered the home fatally shot the double-amputee in the head, saying he was cornered by the wheelchair and thought his partner was being threatened by what turned out to be a ballpoint pen.

Houston's police chief responded Monday to escalating criticism about the weekend shooting by cautioning against a rush to judgment. Community and civil rights groups say the incident is another example of problems the police department has with using excessive force.

"It is my desire to have everyone reserve judgment until all the facts and evidence in this investigation have been gathered," Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland said.

Officer Matthew Marin shot 45-year-old Brian Claunch early Saturday after responding to a call that the man, who reportedly lost two limbs in a train accident, was causing a disturbance. Police say Claunch cornered and threatened to kill Marin, who reportedly told investigators he didn't know the object in Claunch's hand was a pen.

John Garcia, who owns the group home, told reporters over the weekend that Claunch liked to draw.

McClelland said Monday he would enlist the FBI's help in the investigation and reassured the public his officers are trained to deal with people with mental problems.

Police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said she didn't know if the department requesting FBI assistance in officer-involved shootings was rare but said "it's the step we're taking at this point."

But the Greater Houston Coalition for Justice, a group that includes 16 local and national civil rights organizations, suggested Claunch's death was part of a bigger problem at the police department.

"The deeper problem is a failure to discipline for excessive force, especially in the area of shootings," said Randall Kallinen, a member of the group and local a civil rights attorney. "They are concerned only about liability."

Kallinen said he would like the shooting to spark a change in the police department regarding discipline and training of officers.

Marin, a five-year veteran of the department, has been placed on three-day administrative leave. That is standard department procedure for all officer-involved shootings, and Silva said no unusual measures were being taken that would prevent Marin from returning to duty this week.

It's the second time Marin has killed a suspect while on duty. In 2009, investigators said Marin came upon a man stabbing his neighbor to death at an apartment complex and fired when the suspect refused to drop the knife, according to the Houston Chronicle.

In 2008, Marin was one of three Houston police officers who were accused of assaulting the father of Green Bay Packers player Donald Driver. They were later cleared and filed a defamation lawsuit that was later dropped.

The Healing Hands group facility, located in a somewhat rundown brick home, was quiet Monday.

Garcia could not be found at the facility on Monday and a woman at a separate address under his name said he was not there and asked a reporter to leave the property.

Estella Olguin, a spokeswoman for the Harris County Guardianship Program, said Claunch had been a ward of the country since 2003 and had lived at the home since March.

Garcia said Claunch had lost his right leg to just above the knee and his entire right arm when he was hit by a train, according to the Houston Chronicle. He said Claunch was schizophrenic.

Marin and a partner arrived at the Healing Hands around 2:30 a.m. responding to a disturbance call made a caretaker at the home. Police have not elaborated on the nature of the disturbance and authorities Monday had not yet made the 911 call public.

Once inside the home, according to a department statement Monday, the two policemen found Claunch agitated and threatening to kill the officers and other residents. While yelling at the officers, Claunch "waved a shiny object in his hand in their direction," according to the statement.

Police say Claunch refused an officer's direction to drop what turned out to be a ballpoint pen.

"As the suspect backed one of the officers into a corner, he attempted to stab the officer with the object," the statement said. "Officer Marin, fearing for his partner's life, and his own safety, discharged his duty weapon one time, striking the suspect."

Relatives of Claunch could not be found Monday. Public records show Claunch had brushes with the law multiple times over the last 20 years, including a 2006 arrest for trespassing at a shelter. His record also includes drug convictions.

Texas unemployment rate holds steady

September 21, 2012, 6:00 pm by Phil Schoch

AUSTIN ? The Texas economy added 38,000 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in August, for a total of 259,500 nonfarm jobs added since last year. Texas? seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held steady at 7.1 percent in August. The July rate was revised down from 7.2 to 7.1 percent. The state?s unemployment rate is down from 8.1 percent a year ago, and below the national unemployment rate in August of 8.1 percent.

?"A major component to Texas? long-term economic development is consistent job growth, and that is exactly what we are seeing across a number of different industries,? said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar. "The private sector in Texas has grown by 279,800 jobs over the last year, a 3.2 percent increase, while national private sector annual growth has been just 1.8 percent.?

?The annual growth rate for Texas has been positive for 28 consecutive months, and has been at or above 2.0 percent since December 2011.

?"Construction jobs grew by 13,600 in August, more than any other industry in Texas, with a total of nearly 38,000 jobs added in that industry in the past 12 months,? said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. "WorkInTexas.com is a good way to connect to jobs here in Texas across many industries, including Construction.?

?Employers in Professional and Business Services added 6,900 positions in August for its fourth straight month of gains. This industry has expanded by 48,900 jobs since August 2011 for a 3.6 percent growth rate.

Trade, Transportation, and Utilities added 13,100 jobs in August, marking the largest monthly gain since January. Over the month, the Leisure and Hospitality industry expanded by an estimated 4,600 positions. Annual growth in this industry climbed to 4.6 percent in August.

"Texas continues to be the state in which to do business, with seven of the 11 major industries in Texas adding jobs in August,? said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Tom Pauken. "And with the addition of 3,400 Mining and Logging jobs last month, that industry has grown by 9.0 percent in the last year.?

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) had the lowest August unemployment rate in the state at 3.8 percent. The Odessa MSA came in second at 4.5 percent, and the Amarillo MSA third at 5.0 percent (not seasonally adjusted).

Maine Senate Race Looks Competitive and Confounding

Ever since Maine's senior senator, Olympia Snowe, announced her decision to retire at the end of this congressional term, the assumption has been that Democrats will benefit from the Republican senator's decision.

The race has always been somewhat quirky. The front-runner from the outset was considered to be the state's former independent governor, Angus King. King has refused to declare which party he would caucus with if elected to the Senate, but conventional wisdom has been that the two-term governor would be more friendly to Democrats than Republicans because he is pro-abortion rights, supports "Obamacare" and has been an outspoken critic of the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling that allowed corporations to give unlimited political donations.

King remains the frontrunner, but recent polling in the state has showed his lead decreasing. Earlier this week, one poll showed his lead within single digits of his Republican opponent, Charlie Summers, a sharp turnabout from the start of the summer when King was ahead by nearly 20 points.

King's slip in the polls presents a problem for Democrats. Republicans have been supporting Summers since he won his party's primary in June. Summers has also had support from outside groups, such as the Chamber of Commerce, which has been running ads in the state on Summers' behalf.

Because of his status as an Independent candidate, King has not had the same type of structural support backing his campaign.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has notably stayed out of the race. It has not backed the official Democratic nominee, Cynthia Dill, nor has it expressly backed King, given that King has not expressly sided with them. King hasn't had any backing from outside groups, either.

"What we have seen is that Summers has risen a bit in the polls and King has come down slightly, largely as a result of two different phenomen[a]," said Anthony Corrado, a professor of political science at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

"First, Summers is now starting to coalesce the Republican vote, and that's largely as a result of advertising conducted by the Chamber and the NRSC," Corrado said. "The other side of this was to bring King down a bit by promoting the Democratic contender, Cynthia Dill, which has solely been done by Maine Freedom PAC, a conservative-oriented PAC which has been running pro-Dill ads as a way to encourage Democrats to look to Dill rather than King."

The result has been a dilemma for Democrats in a state that they had previously considered to be a surefire pick-up for them, and a tough race for a candidate who hadn't run for office in more than a decade. King's second term as governor ended in 2003.

"What's particularly interesting is here you have, one, a Senate race where the Democrat has essentially done no advertising and doesn't have the support of the party, where the Republican has largely been supported by outside groups, and where you have a conservative group actually making positive ads for a Democrat as a way to reduce support for the Independent to give the Republican Party a chance," said Corrado. "That's a dynamic you're not seeing anywhere else."

Equally perplexing is the question of how King should proceed, as well as how the Democratic Party should proceed. For national Democrats, there don't appear to be many options besides hoping that King can turn things around or jumping in and deciding to support Dill. Her polling numbers have climbed somewhat in the past couple of months, but they are still far behind King's and Summers'.

For King, Corrado said, there's another option besides going negative in advertisements against Summers or explicitly stating his plans to side with Democrats, if elected.

"Rather than addressing issues about who are you going to caucus with and rather than launching attack ads, launch positive ads that talk about what he would do and why he's different," said Corrado. "I think that that message will be effective because it would reinforce the general image of King as being more independent and not simply repeating the types of politics that are seen in Washington."

The role of the guarantor inside the complete deal is very simple. They usually don?t hear from the lender when the consumer is able to pay off the credit in time. Nevertheless, when the applicant doesn?t pay back the quantity inside time period, next under the agreement from the guarantor financial loans, the particular guarantor is liable to cover the borrowed funds quantity along with the interest and all some other costs.

In contrast to the unsecured loans, in which the candidate alone is likely for many fees about the loan, underneath the guarantor mortgage the actual guarantor gets accountable for repayment as they have got stood as surety. It?s a large obligation which is why solely those which know the candidate strongly enough might consent to function as the guarantor for this particular loans.

Under the unique circumstances, it really is observed that banking institutions are usually leaving offering heavy funds to people. Banks are actually able to spend that towards the organizations, which subsequently lend the cash to folks. Nonetheless, financial institutions usually are not ready to directly provide funds towards the consumer, especially on an unsecured foundation.

Along with short term loans such as pay day loans, the amount is going to be limited, the particular payment term very quick and also the rate of interest very high, and also other costs. Defaulting or slowing down repayment can lead to nonetheless much more costs getting extra upon and also the customer is going to be with high risk of finding yourself paying often times more the total amount they?ve got lent. Therefore the customer has to take into account all phrases carefully before signing the agreement for this type of bank loan. This loan should be considered being a temporary, cease gap set up simply as well as sufficient cash flow needs to be set up to fulfill responsibilities.

I was so moved in what I have learned about this on the main site, consequently I had to write my views about it. To get further amazing information regarding this short article, ensure to look at click here or guarantor loans. (4)

Mets' Harvey wraps historic season

Matt Harvey?s final start of the season was delayed one day by a rain and the Mets rookie tossed seven innings of one-run, one-hit ball against the Phillies last night before being shut down to limit his workload.

Harvey finishes with a 2.73 ERA, .200 opponents? batting average, and 70/26 K/BB ratio in 59 innings, which along with his at times overpowering raw stuff has to have Mets fans awfully excited.

He also joins some pretty elite company by making double-digit starts and striking out double-digit batters per nine innings as a 23-year-old, which had previously been accomplished by just seven other pitchers in baseball history:

                      YEAR SO/9
 MATT HARVEY 2012 10.6
 Stephen Strasburg 2012 11.1
 Scott Kazmir 2007 10.4
 Mark Prior 2004 10.5
 Johan Santana 2002 11.4
 Bobby Witt 1987 10.1
 Sam McDowell 1966 10.4
 Sandy Koufax 1959 10.2

That?s a pretty interesting mix of pitching phenoms.

Counting his work in the minors Harvey threw a total of 169.1 innings this season with 182 strikeouts versus 139 hits allowed. His control still needs plenty of work, but Harvey sure looks like he has ace potential.

Three dogs near death saved by Portsmouth Humane Society ...

Charlie and Grace

Grace and Charlie?are near mirror images of each other.

Their horror story of malnourishment is a painfully sad case of Deja Vu for the Portsmouth Humane Society after they received a dog named Hope. She was left for dead, so weak she couldn?t walk.

Update: Emaciated dog found in Portsmouth continues to?recover

?They?re from three different locations in Portsmouth, but the condition is relatively the same? They?re skeletons with hair essentially,? said Executive Director Christie Chipps-Peters.

If Charlie hadn?t come in on Wednesday, he may not have made it.

Both are about a year old. It?s tough to tell whether at any point during their short lives they?ve gotten the TLC their sweet eyes beg for.

Marks show where bugs feasted on their ears.

?The flies, they just bite and bite and bite and once they get a spot they just keep going,? Peters said.

Their respective owners neglected the dogs so badly that the Humane Society says they would have been better off on their own.

?It?s the dogs that can?t get access to food, that are in someone?s yard, tied up to a chain that are left to die and it?s disgusting,? Peters said.

Hope was in even worse shape than these two, and she?s recovering nicely, which is keeping them optimistic that Charlie and Grace will soon be better than ever.

?They?re going to be in treatment together so maybe they?ll give each other courage.?

Brown presses Warren on ethnicity issue in Massachusetts Senate debate

BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts Republican Senator Scott Brown slammed Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren's claim she is part Cherokee as they squared off in a televised debate on Thursday in one of the country's most closely watched U.S. Senate races.

Brown called on Warren, a high-profile liberal supporter of President Barack Obama, to release her personnel records from Harvard University to prove she did not gain any unfair advantage as an ethnic minority when the college hired her in the 1990s.

Warren is trying to regain a seat - which Brown won by an upset in 2010 in a special election following the death of Democratic liberal stalwart Edward Kennedy - that would help the Democrats retain their slim majority in the U.S. Senate.

Accusations that Warren may have received special breaks because she claimed Cherokee ancestry first surfaced in April, dogging the Harvard Law School professor and former Obama administration official and giving Brown a way to challenge her integrity.

"As you know ... Professor Warren has claimed she is a Native American, a person of color. As you can see, she is not," Brown said in their first of four TV debates before the November 6 election.

Brown characterized Warren as being disingenuous about her heritage.

"I didn't get an advantage because of my background," Warren replied. "I can't change who I am. I am who I am."

Warren said she was told as a child that her mother had Native American roots. "When I was growing up, these are the stories I knew about my heritage," Warren said. "I never asked anybody for any documentation. I don't know any kid who did."

Inside the studios of WBZ-TV in Boston, Brown kept pressing the issue, saying all she needed to do was to release her personnel records to show what box she checked for describing her heritage.

WARREN LEADS IN POLLS

Brown's salvo came on the heels of two polls released this week that gave the lead in the race to Warren, chief architect of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which was established after Wall Street banks buckled during the 2008 financial crisis.

She got a political bounce from a fiery speech at the Democratic National Convention, while women voters continue to favor her over Brown by a comfortable margin, said Peter Ubertaccio, chairman of Stonehill College's political science and international studies department.

"Republicans had no bounce from the GOP convention and their brand continues to be very unpopular here," Ubertaccio said.

Brown has been working to put distance between himself and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor.

He has rejected Romney's comment that disparaged 47 percent of Americans as victims reliant on federal aid. Romney made his remark in May at a private fundraiser in Florida. A secretly recorded video of the fundraiser surfaced on Monday

During the debate, Warren cast herself as a champion of the working class and criticized Brown for voting against three jobs bills in a row in the Senate.

"I want to go to Washington to fight for jobs," she said.

Known for his pickup truck, good looks and moderate views, Brown caught Massachusetts' Democratic machine napping when he emerged from obscurity to beat Martha Coakley, the state's attorney general, in the 2010 special election.

Ubertaccio said Brown's attack on Warren over the ethnic heritage issue was a "dangerous" move.

"Voters really moved by that are very likely already with him," Ubertaccio said.

Jesus's wife? Scholar announces existence of a new early Christian gospel from Egypt

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Four words on a previously unknown papyrus fragment provide the first evidence that some early Christians believed Jesus had been married, Harvard Professor Karen King told the 10th International Congress of Coptic Studies today.

King, the Hollis Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School, announced the existence of the ancient text at the Congress's meeting, held every four years and hosted this year by the Vatican's Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum in Rome. The four words that appear on the fragment translate to, "Jesus said to them, my wife." The words, written in Coptic, a language of ancient Egyptian Christians, are on a papyrus fragment of about one and a half inches by three inches.

"Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, even though no reliable historical evidence exists to support that claim," King said. "This new gospel doesn't prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage. From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether it was better not to marry, but it was over a century after Jesus's death before they began appealing to Jesus's marital status to support their positions."

Roger Bagnall, director of the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World in New York, believes the fragment to be authentic based on examination of the papyrus and the handwriting, and Ariel Shisha-Halevy, a Coptic expert at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, considers it likely to be authentic on the basis of language and grammar, King said. Final judgment on the fragment, King said, depends on further examination by colleagues and further testing, especially of the chemical composition of the ink.

One side of the fragment contains eight incomplete lines of handwriting, while the other side is badly damaged and the ink so faded that only three words and a few individual letters are still visible, even with infrared photography and computer photo enhancement. Despite its tiny size and poor condition, King said, the fragment provides tantalizing glimpses into issues about family, discipleship, and marriage that concerned ancient Christians.

King and colleague AnneMarie Luijendijk, an associate professor of religion at Princeton University, believe that the fragment is part of a newly discovered gospel. Their analysis of the fragment is scheduled for publication in the January 2013 issue of Harvard Theological Review, a peer-reviewed journal.

King has posted a draft of the paper, an extensive question-and-answer on the fragment and its meaning, and images of it, on a page on the Divinity School website.

The brownish-yellow, tattered fragment belongs to an anonymous private collector who contacted King to help translate and analyze it. The collector provided King with a letter from the early 1980s indicating that Professor Gerhard Fecht from the faculty of Egyptology at the Free University in Berlin believed it to be evidence for a possible marriage of Jesus.

King said that when the owner first contacted her about the papyrus, in 2010, "I didn't believe it was authentic and told him I wasn't interested." But the owner was persistent, so in December 2011, King invited him to bring it to her at Harvard. After examining it, in March 2012 King carried the fragment to New York and, together with Luijendijk, took it to Bagnall to be authenticated. When Bagnall's examination of the handwriting, ways that the ink had penetrated and interacted with the papyrus, and other factors, confirmed its likely authenticity, work on the analysis and interpretation of the fragment began in earnest, King said.

Little is known about the discovery of the fragment, but it is believed to have come from Egypt because it is written in Coptic, the form of the Egyptian language used by Christians there during the Roman imperial period. Luijendijk suggested that "a fragment this damaged probably came from an ancient garbage heap like all of the earliest scraps of the New Testament." Since there is writing on both sides of the fragment, it clearly belongs to an ancient book, or codex, not a scroll, she said.

The gospel of which the fragment is but a small part, which King and Luijendijk have named the Gospel of Jesus's Wife for reference purposes, was probably originally written in Greek, the two professors said, and only later translated into Coptic for use among congregations of Coptic-speaking Christians. King dated the time it was written to the second half of the second century because it shows close connections to other newly discovered gospels written at that time, especially the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Mary, and the Gospel of Philip.

Like those gospels, it was probably ascribed to one or more of Jesus's closest followers, but the actual author would have remained unknown even if more of it had survived. As it stands, the remaining piece is too small to tell us anything more about who may have composed, read, or circulated the new gospel, King said.

The main topic of the dialogue between Jesus and his disciples is one that deeply concerned early Christians, who were asked to put loyalty to Jesus before their natal families, as the New Testament gospels show. Christians were talking about themselves as a family, with God the father, his son Jesus, and members as brothers and sisters. Twice in the tiny fragment, Jesus speaks of his mother and once of his wife -- one of whom is identified as "Mary." The disciples discuss whether Mary is worthy, and Jesus states that "she can be my disciple." Although less clear, it may be that by portraying Jesus as married, the Gospel of Jesus's Wife conveys a positive theological message about marriage and sexuality, perhaps similar to the Gospel of Philip's view that pure marriage can be an image of divine unity and creativity.

From the very beginning, Christians disagreed about whether they should marry or be celibate. But, King notes, it was not until around 200 that there is the earliest extant claim that Jesus did not marry, recorded by Clement of Alexandria. He wrote of Christians who claimed that marriage is fornication instituted by the devil, and says people should emulate Jesus in not marrying, King said. A decade or two later, she said, Tertullian of Carthage in North Africa declared that Jesus was "entirely unmarried," and Christians should aim for a similar condition. Yet Tertullian did not condemn sexual relations altogether, allowing for one marriage, although he denounced not only divorce, but even remarriage for widows and widowers as overindulgence. Nearly a century earlier, the New Testament letter of 1 Timothy had warned that people who forbid marriage are following the "doctrines of demons," although it didn't claim Jesus was married to support that point.

In the end, the view that dominated would claim celibacy as the highest form of Christian sexual virtue, while conceding marriage for the sake of reproduction alone. The Gospel of Jesus's Wife, if it was originally written in the late second century, suggests that the whole question of Jesus's marital status only came up over a century after Jesus died as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage, King said. King noted that contemporary debates over celibate clergy, the roles of women, sexuality, and marriage demonstrate that the issues are far from resolved.

"The discovery of this new gospel," King said, "offers an occasion to rethink what we thought we knew by asking what role claims about Jesus's marital status played historically in early Christian controversies over marriage, celibacy, and family. Christian tradition preserved only those voices that claimed Jesus never married. The Gospel of Jesus's Wife now shows that some Christians thought otherwise."

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? A Refund ...

During the past, stocks pick programs were reserved for and only utilised by trading pros with large corporations. These are programs which reference past market info when investigating realtime market information, taking the whole reach of the market into account, to efficiently exploit the market?s pattern-esque movements and get a surprisingly good read and prophecy on where the market will go next in order that you can trade correctly without having to spend the effort or time doing so yourself. First, a refund goes a good distance in this niche. Stocks pick software has helped a considerable number of traders make a ton of cash on some hot choices, but because it's been so lucrative for so many traders this has led several publishers to piece together ineffectual pickers of their own and pass them off as money earners with interesting branding and web sites.

Refusing to put up with and correctly handle trades that do not work leads straight to trading screw ups. Learning how to accept and handle trading loss might be of the same importance as making good trades. Survival Tips Here are 7 steps that you can take to survive and even prosper when suffering a loss : Jot down the trade as it happened : Don?t sweep the loss under the rug! You want to gain from the loss ( that's its worth ), so scribble it down. Include how you viewed the market at the time and the way the market action and your signals seemed to meet the standards for a sound trade set-up. Judge the trade : Once the trading day is over, return to what you wrote and see what can be learned. There'll be moments when you believe there is an excellent chance to make a trade only to realise that you are making for a problem. The key here is to think first before leaping right in. You've got to look at the situation punctiliously before deciding for the following step.

Conventional , buy-and-hold speculators like nice smooth, slow, steady ( upward ) movement. The only real way to be successful in the stock exchange as far as daytrading is troubled is, to prophesy the stock patterns and try and make a capital on the short term market upward swing. Nonetheless a day trader LOVES volatility, because they recognise what it represents. If they learn daytrading methods for success. Unsteady ) markets represent?IF they know what they are doing. A good rule is to be aware of momentum. Naturally, an inexpert trader will get eaten alive by volatility ? the market will take them down quicker than they can blink.

When it is slowing down and you detect that there are not as many customers, that's when you wish to sell. Stock option day-trading isn?t right for everybody so do not feel pushed into it. There are a good deal of alternative routes to invest if you are not pleased with this one. Yet if you're impressed by it, then take time to study share trading to see what it can do for you! .
